With personal computers connected to your AS/400, you've
likely got a security problem. Common end-user tools such
as FTP, ODBC, and Network Neighborhood provide end-users
with direct access to your precious AS/400 data, without
regard to menu control. PowerLock/SE is free (no time
limit) software that will monitor network access to your
AS/400. PowerLock/SE will show you where the holes are, and
when you're ready to step up and purchase the full
PowerLock, we can block access from over 200 network access
points and begin to protect your data.

LEAD STORY
"iSeries performance breaks the bank"
Proving once again that it's fast and furious, the iSeries
topped the recent Midas-Kapiti International (MKI)
benchmark for server performance in the high-volume,
banking industry. MKI, an international banking and
financing software vendor, matched a 24-way iSeries 840
with its Equation DBA banking application and concluded
that the iSeries can handle loads typically associated with
mainframes.

[1] "LANSA, IBM help businesses implement Java and
WebSphere for iSeries"
LANSA said it has struck a deal with Big Blue that has
LANSA integrating IBM's WebSphere Application Server with
its e-business development solutions, LANSA for the Web and
LANSA Commerce Edition. The integrated offering is expected
to speed up solutions for implementing e-business and Java
applications with WebSphere, cutting training costs and
overall deployment costs for iSeries customers. It is also
expected to help customers leverage Java, and other
technologies, such as wireless and XML.

[2] "New technologies bolster enterprise Linux"
IBM is doing all it can to herald Linux to the masses. Big
Blue debuted two new technologies last week that enhance
the enterprise capabilities of the open-source operating
system. While the technologies haven't yet been
incorporated into the official Linux kernel, they're ready
for customer use and will probably be adopted by Linux in
the future, according to IBM.

IBM is creeping up on BEA Systems in the application server
market. A report released by IDC shows Big Blue within
three percentage points of BEA and highlights IBM's
WebSphere application server worldwide market share as
having grown at twice the market's average over 1999 and

Open-source fans are taking strides toward reproducing the
foundation of Microsoft's .Net so people can use the
technology without Microsoft's involvement. With .Net,
Microsoft plans to sell its services, and the software that
powers those services over the Internet.

[1] "Tech tip: Small font size in output"
The writer of this question was trying to print over
TCP/IP, but when doing so, he had problems with the font
size in the output. Everything worked well when he used a
spool file with PCL macros. But if he tried to print using
the Print Screen key, the output was very small. Check out
this tip to see what advice the expert gave him.

[2] "V5R1 brings new opportunities for printing"
The V5R1 announcement recently made brought new
developments to many areas of the iSeries. One area is
printing enhancements. Some of the enhancements are free,
and others are licensed programs that you'll have to
purchase to use. In this column the writer touches on the
free printing enhancements.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
----------------------------------------
"Smoking mad over pot virus"
Does your PC have a bad case of the munchies? Does it
giggle incessantly? It could have been infected with the
Marijuana virus. I-Worm.Mari comes as an e-mail with the
subject line "check this out." When the computer "inhales,"
a Trojan Horse program sets the Internet Explorer browser
start page to marijuana.com and pastes a pot leaf in the
Windows system tray (no word yet if the virus affects the
PC's short term memory or desire to work). The folks at
marijuana.com are fuming -- they say they have nothing to
do with the wired weed, which could lead to harder viruses.
