LEAD STORY
"iSeries: lean, green, NT-busting machine"
The recent power crunch in California highlights the need
for more energy-efficient servers, this AS/400 Network
column suggests. A possible solution would be to
consolidate tens or even hundreds of power-hungry NT
servers into a single iSeries. Besides energy savings, the
longer life of the iSeries would mean fewer Intel boxes in
recycling bins.

[2] "Linux breaking out in clusters"
By 2005 Linux will progress enough to be considered a viable choice
for handling enterprise class applications, International Data
Corp. predicts. Last year, more users deployed mission-
critical applications running on Linux than in 1999, and
that trend is expected to continue.

[3] "IBM builds smallest-ever circuit"
IBM recently announced it has built the smallest computer
logic circuit. The circuit was made with a carbon nanotube,
which is 100,000 times thinner than a human hair. Carbon
nanotubes are thought to be the heir apparent to replace
silicon as the main ingredient of transistors and computer
chips.

"Keyboards spread disease"
When was the last time you washed your hands? Apparently
humans are not the only organisms getting hip to the
computer age. Bacteria are too. Britain's "The Mirror"
conducted an experiment in a London office and found that
computer keyboards are popular bacterial hangouts. The
little things love the warmth. (No word which keys they
prefer -- maybe the letter "b" for "bacteria"?) The
experiment did not turn up the really sickening stuff like
salmonella and E. coli, but there's always next time!
