What drives Fast400 developers?
The cat and mouse game between the developers of Fast400 and IBM took another turn last week with The Storage Solutions Group issuing another challenge -- version 4.1 of Fast400.

Fast400 -- the green-screen governor buster -- emerged last year, and since then IBM has been doing all it can to thwart it. When Big Blue first released PTFs to block it, Fast400 developers said they would find a way around them. It appears they may have.

In a recent announcement, Colin Wells of The Storage Solutions Group said, "The latest version of Fast400 works great with IBM's current PTFs." Wells also said in a recent article in The Four Hundred that the developers are confident they can keep up with whatever IBM does to stop the product. The article said they even went so far as to give IBM a copy of Fast400.

Everything they do seems to be a gibe and challenge against IBM. Is that really what's going on? Are the people behind Fast400 just taunting IBM or are they providing you with a solid offering that will improve your productivity? What's your take on it? E-mail me and let me know. We'll post responses in an article on the site. You can also take our poll and let us know what you think.

>> Subfile with variable input fields. How'd they do that?
One user writes, "Some years ago I saw an application that uses a subfile that had input fields with variable lengths. Example:
Name: _____________
Age: ______
How can I do that?"
A couple users offer suggestions.

>> IBM certifications: Are they worth it?
With constantly changing technology, it's no wonder some iSeries users feel like they can't keep up. One user asked recently if certifications help. Are they worth the investment or are there other better options? A couple others offer their opinions. What do you think?

>> JSPs take a long time to load
The scenario: A person has WebSphere installed on an iSeries running V5R1. The problem is that Java Server Pages (JSPs) are taking a long time to load when they are accessed for the first time. Subsequent hits take less time. But if he lets things sit and then tries to access them, he's back to the long wait.

Tip of the Week:
Prevent accidental changes to production source code
Even with source/object management systems in place, it's still possible for someone with sufficient authority to alter a production source file member while using the STRSEU command. It's too easy for managers or senior programmers who are looking at or researching production code to accidentally alter or delete lines of source or mistakenly start modifying a production source instead of a development version of source. You can track those kinds of mistakes through security auditing, journaling, etc., but it's better to prevent those simple errors rather than fixing them.
