What's your favorite iSeries command?
A few weeks ago we published an administrator's tip titled Three fun things you can do with WRKACTJOB written by Joe Hertvik. Many of you flocked to it like it was the best information you'd seen in a long time and gave it one of the highest ratings we've ever seen on a tip. Who knew something so simple could be so powerful?

That got us thinking: What other tools or commands are important to you? What are the best ones in your toolbox? Are there any older commands that aren't talked about as often but are still just as good?

E-mail me and tell me which commands/tools are tops on your list and tell me what you use them for. We'll take what you send and put together a series of tips about those commands so everyone can put them to use.

This Week: In the forums
>> Starting WAS automatically
Do you know how to automatically start a WebSphere Application Server (WAS) instance, say at IMPL or Subsystem start? If so, post your suggestions and help out this struggling user.

>> Compiling programs on V4R2 and running them on V5R1
Scenario: This company has several client sites that are going to upgrade from V4R2 to a new V5R1 box. They program on a V4R4 box and compile the RPG programs at V4R2.
Question: Is there going to be a problem compiling the programs at V4R2 and using them on V5R1 client boxes?

What do you think? Read what site experts Laird Scranton and Tim Granatir said and post your own comments.

>> Save-while-active backup
This user writes, "I had read about doing a save-while-active backup that referred to "quiessing" the system, keeping users off for about 10 minutes and setting a focal point for restores. I have looked all over the suggested IBM resource, SC41-5304, but I am still not sure what it means to "quiess" the system." Do you know what it means? If so, click over and lend a hand.

Tip of the Week:
Display any user's screen on your terminal
A typical day in a typical user support scenario: The phone rings and a confused user says he can't do certain things on the system. You proceed to ask him for the screen ID and what he sees on the screen. After an exhaustive list of questions, you finally decide to pay him a visit to see for yourself what is on his screen. You take the lift two floors down and finally make your way to their seating place. Ah hah! You finally see the screen and understand what was the bother. Your simple reply: "You should use option "B", instead of "D" to perform agent enquiries."

Does that sound familiar to you? Wouldn't it be useful if you could immediately view his screen right from where you were sitting? Click over to see how to do just that.
