Additional techniques for finding system information

In a previous tech tip Joe Hertvik discussed how to retrieve some
critical information that vendors, especially IBM, require for
software and hardware purchases and upgrades. He expressed his
displeasure at the usual techniques for finding two pieces of
information -- amount of working memory and amount of free DASD
(hard drive space) -- and petitioned Search400 readers for other
ways to retrieve this information. Quite a few members sent in
comments on how to best find system information before
upgrading.

Answers to Other Administrator Questions
=============================================================

1. Viewing disk units with OpsNav V5R1
Search400 user Richard McDermott tells us what needs to be done to
view or work with disk units in normal/graphical view under
hardware. There have been some changes since V5R1. Check out this tip
for the details.
http://search400.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid3_gci818536,00.html

2. OpsNav V5R1 and the OWNER parameter
One user writes, "We are new to using OpsNav V5R1 and are having
difficulty utilizing a pretty basic iSeries security feature.
Where can I find the OWNER field when adding an ID using OpsNav)?
We don't want users owning objects, only groups can own them so we
always make that field equal *GRPPRF. Plus, when I come across an
object that may have to have an owner changed, it won't let me
assign the ownership to another group, only to individual users."
Search400 security expert Carol Woodbury offers some advice.

3. Save-while-active backup
This Search400 member had read about doing a save-while-active
backup, which referred to "quiessing" the system. He did some
research but was still unsure what it means to "quiess" the
system. He turned to the Search400 Managing the iSeries Forum for
some advice. Read what other users had to say.

4. Set your system time using FTP
Search400 user Doug Hart's client has several iSeries', and the time
is set by hand on each one. This causes a swing of several minutes
from the slowest to the fastest. With some investigation he found
that FTPing into the U.S. Navy time server he would get a welcome
message containing the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). According
to Doug, the setup is quite simple.
