How will IBM cuts affect you?
Two weeks ago, IBM began slashing jobs at a number of facilities, including the iSeries plant in Rochester, Minn. The total number of jobs cut now exceeds 5,000, yet IBM has not issued a general statement regarding the cuts, except to say that the layoffs are a "skills rebalancing" to meet technical needs.

Last week, we posted a Search400 poll about the layoffs at IBM and asked you about the affect the job cuts would have on your shop. So far, 43% say it will mean losing valuable contacts, and 33% say it's a sign that IBM will invest less in iSeries technology.

Now, we're hoping you can be more specific. How exactly will the job cuts affect your shops? Are you concerned about losing sales contacts? Or are you worried about who will service your systems? What about the investment issue? What indications do you have that the cuts mean less investment in the iSeries technology? Are there other areas to be concerned about? Are you currently experiencing a shift or are you anticipating a problem? Contact me, and let me know what's going on. And if you haven't already, take our poll.

Tip of the Week:
The secret to saving only source files
Recently a Search400 member asked our site experts for advice on saving only source files. Expert Tim Granatir not only provides a way to do that in this tip, but he also points out several interesting features in the program that apply to other applications. Some of those features include use of the system file QADBXREF and use of the FROMRCD parameter on the CPYF command. Read how you can use them to save and locate source files, as well as speed up processing time.
