Security takes planning and work -- be prepared
With the anniversary of Sept. 11 quickly approaching, many iSeries administrators are sure to have a few things on their minds. The first being security. The fact that many experts in terrorism believe that there could be a cyberattack has more people paying attention to system security. Can a hacker get into your system? Is a firewall enough? How current is your security policy?
As an administrator you must also carefully consider the level of authority you allow users to have. Those users can get into your system and either unintentionally or deliberately delete, damage or tamper data.
Search400.com has spent a lot of time gathering quality experts and valuable resources to help you protect your systems. Let us help you get started:
* Submit a question to Search400.com's security expert, Carol Woodbury.
* Check out the featured topic Secure your iSeries.
* Read these Best Web Links on iSeries security.
* Try Search400.com's targeted search engine for more relevant information on security.
Backup and recovery also critical
Backup and recovery is most likely the second thing on administrators' minds, or let's say it should be. The data that resides on your system is by far the most valuable component of your computer system. If a system failure or disaster occurs, you can replace the computer hardware and software that runs your business. Your company's data, however, is irreplaceable. For that reason alone, it's critical to have a good backup and recovery plan in place. If you're wondering what you should back up, or when and how often do you need to back up, turn to Search400.com.
* Send your backup and recovery questions to Search400.com expert Ken Graap.
* Check out this featured topic: Better backups.
* Use Search400.com's targeted search engine to get iSeries-specific information on backup and recovery.

Need help with incremental restores
"Peterdekroon" wants to save time on backup windows by doing incremental saves. But they keep having problems with it. When restoring an incremental backup after they restored the full backup, existing members get re-named and the logicals remain on the re-named members. Is this a known problem? Did they do something wrong? Or is there a simple solution to this?

Changing default action of C signals
"PeteinPortland" needs your help. He writes, "I have a program that uses the C function 'sleep'. I have a second program that sends an alert signal to the first one. Unfortunately, when the first program gets the signal, it ends the job. The job-log has this message: "Message . . . . : Job ended abnormally. Cause . . . . . : A SIGALRM signal was received for the job. The action for the signal was to terminate the job."
How can the default action be changed for a signal? I have been out to the API manuals, but I am having trouble converting the C examples into RPG." Have any ideas to help Pete?

What's up with the bad WebFacing performance?
"Alfonso" has an AS/400e model 720 #2061 (240 CPW) and interactive feature #1501 (70 CPW) with 512 MB of main memory. He successfully converted a small application using WebFacing, but the performance is very poor. With 5250 sessions the response time is 2 seconds average (120 active users), and with Webfacing it is about 10 minutes (one active user). Read what Web development expert Jim Mason and other users had to say. |

Save time and aggravation -- automate FTP data transfers
There are many techniques for transferring data from one machine to another. Some techniques have the advantage of security (tapes, CDs), but they take additional time in delivering the data. When time is critical, FTP offers a fast way to transfer data. Within the process of FTP data transfer, you can use several approaches with various degrees of automation. In this tip Search400.com expert Tim Granatir provides an example of how to automate the transfer of libraries from one iSeries to another by using batch files and your PC as an intermediate host.
Generally, a PC is not required to be an intermediary in an FTP transfer between two iSeries, but there are some instances where it is necessary. The most common scenario is when the PC is the only link between two iSeries machines, such as using your local PC to dial in to a PPP line on another iSeries. In this example, Tim shows you how an old-fashioned DOS batch file can still be an effective tool. |
