Get your own iSeries-specific search engine
After a fun summer, most of us are settling back into a busy work schedule. It's a great opportunity to think of interesting ways to increase traffic to your sites or provide additional services to employees. For example, do you find our iSeries 400-focused search engine useful? You can now share this technology with others in just a few easy steps. How? It's as easy as sending me an e-mail.

We offer our members the unique opportunity to add a Search400.com Search Box to their individual Web sites, intranets and company home pages -- for free. The Search Box provides your colleagues, friends and visitors with the ability to search iSeries-specific information quickly and efficiently. I have outlined a few simple steps to help you get your Search Box up and running. Still have questions? Simply e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], and I'd be happy to help.

*** Include the following info in your e-mail to me ***

Step 1: Choose a Search Box

* We offer four versions of the Search400.com Search Box. Click here to choose the one you like best.

Step 2: E-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and include the following information:

* Subject line -- Search Box request
* Your name
* Name of the company
* Your phone number
* URL of where you will post our Search Box (If it is on an intranet, just write intranet)
* List Search Box style (1-4) (from step one)

That's it! In a few days I will e-mail you the code and posting instructions for your Search Box, and you can take it from there. I look forward to hearing from you.

As always, I welcome your feedback about the site, its features and content. Please feel free to e-mail me at any time.

Disaster recovery -- be prepared

 Expert Technical Advice:

Featured Expert: Ken Graap, senior AS/400e system administrator, Northwest Natural Gas

Category: Backup and recovery
With all the data companies generate and store, you can't afford to lose any. Ken Graap can help you if you're in a bind.

This Week: In the forums
>> Visual RPG better than WebSphere?
"Mjohns1495" says WebSphere requires expensive hardware enhancements to run smoothly. A low-cost alternative, he says, is ASNA's Visual RPG. What do you think? Is Visual RPG a better tool or should iSeries users stick with IBM products?

>> Security policy: Disabling QSECOFR
In setting up a security policy to minimize the risk of being hacked, is it a good idea to disable the QSECOFR profile? Are there any side effects from disabling of QSECOFR? One user says no. Do you agree?

>> Programming 101
"Dougiedude" has been an AS/400 operator for eight years. He will soon migrate to the iSeries, and his supervisor wants him to learn "the finer art of programming in CL, RPG, and whatever (he) can learn." He's looking for books, Web sites and training information, and fortunately a few people have some suggestions. Check them out (if you're in the same boat) or post your own resources.

Tip of the Week:
WebFacing extends the reach of your legacy code
If you are a typical iSeries shop, you probably have thousands of existing 5250 apps developed over many years. Those applications aren't going away anytime soon and represent the core business processes of your business. What if you could Web-enable those applications without modifying a single line of code? What if you could extend the reach of your system via a simple Web browser? That's exactly what IBM's iSeries tools developers have done for you with WebFacing. Web development guru Bob Cancilla shows you step by step just how easy it is to WebFace your apps.
