Perhaps you would like to know which files have the most updates, deletes or reads. Or which files are opened and closed the most. Such information can be useful in profiling individual programs, spotting performance bottlenecks and ensuring your system runs smoothly. There are many ways to determine such information, including performance tools, but journaling may be a better option. It's easy to use journaling to gather information about the number of updates to a file, and it takes little or no preparation or overhead. The information is stored in each file object and can be extracted by simply using the DSPFD command. >> CLICK here for the full tip: http://www.search400.com/tip/1,289483,sid3_gci850005,00.html ==================================================================== Answers to Other Programmer Questions ==================================================================== 1. Get rid of deleted records and improve performance As with most things in life, as your databases grow older, the larger and slower they become. The good news is that you can do something about it. Site expert John Kohan shows you how, using the DSPFD command. http://search400.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid3_gci345301,00.html 2. Find based on physical file for logical file used Member Azmat Bhatti says you can use the DSPFD with Access Path parameter to find out the physical file the logical file is pointing to. http://search400.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid3_gci761469,00.html 3. Problems with remote journaling One user writes, "I'm using the remote journal function to propagate some data to another iSeries machine. Both machines have V5R1 with the newest PTFs. My problem is that the remote journal function ends every night about midnight with message-id CPF70D5 (Code 4). I have to activate the remote journal function every morning again. We've already replaced two hubs and a switch to exclude network errors, but the error still appears every night." Backup and recovery expert Ken Graap offers a possible solution. http://search400.techtarget.com/ateQuestionNResponse/0,289625,sid3_cid448841_tax288615,00.html 4. DASD balancing help "Gesbos1" added 23 disks to his 730 iSeries. After everything was complete he ran the STRASPBAL using *capacity as the type parameter and let it run for four hours. All the disks (except for five) balanced out to around 43%. The five out of balance varied in amount of capacity used. He can't figure out why this is happening or how to fix it. Application development expert Tim Granatir works with him to try to solve the problem. http://search400.discussions.techtarget.com/WebX?[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.ee84639/351 _____________________________________________________________________ IMPORTANT MESSAGES AND LINKS: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS NOW | Search400 IT Excellence Awards We're on the lookout for medium- and large-scale companies that are blazing new trails in iSeries 400 computing.
