Today's Featured Tip
===================================================================

Managing WebSphere objects: The facts about EARs and WARs

Since IBM began shipping the 4.0 version of WebSphere Advanced
Edition, the server and documentation imply that you must package up
all of your objects and stick them in either an Enterprise Archive
(EAR) or Web Archive (WAR). From there you are supposed to publish
your EAR file to a directory on your target machine, then via the
WebSphere console install the application bundled in the EAR.

Vendors may think it's more efficient having the files automatically
unpacked and installed, but in reality it creates a nightmare for
those developing and deploying in-house Java applications. Care is
needed when managing WebSphere objects. E-business expert Bob
Cancilla point out what you should be aware of and ways to work
around them.

Answers to Other Technical Questions
===================================================================

1. Eliminate WebSphere team deployment headache
IBM made some significant enhancements to the Administrative Console
with the introduction of V4.01 Advanced Edition. Unfortunately, the
product's origins on the NT platform present challenges to multiuser
machines like the iSeries that were not anticipated or handled well
by the cross-platform development team, says e-business expert Bob
Cancilla.

2. Introduction to QShell: Administer Java applications
IBM provides more than one way to do most of the administrative tasks
you need for Java applications. Some of them can just help manage
files; others do much more. In this tip Web development expert Jim
Mason reviews the features of QShell and who can use it.

3. Planning an iSeries Java education strategy
Considering using Java for your e-business projects? If you're new
to Java, you'll need to educate yourself about the language. But
before you dive in and start taking courses, you need to create a
plan for learning the language. What are your Java application
needs? What resources do you have available? How will you use Java?
Search400 expert Jim Mason outlines how to prepare this strategy and
helps you get on track.

4. Create a second thread for a database request
One user writes, "I am developing a Web application. The user asks
for specific data from the 'Global Database'. As the data retrieval
takes more time, the user should be able to get back to the same page
or to some other page so that the user can perform other operations
until the required data is displayed. How can I accomplish this? I am
using Java, JSP, Oracle and SQL on Win2000. Is this in any way
related to 'Asynchronous Query Execution' or Threads?" Web
development expert Jim Mason offers some advice.

FREE WHITE PAPERS | Search400.com

When it comes to researching hardware or software for your shop,
there's nothing like an independent review of the product to help
you decide whether it's right for you. And white papers often can
provide that outsider point of view. But finding those white papers
can be a hassle, so we've added a new section to the site to help
you out. We've gone out and found more than 200 white papers, both
from independent sources and vendors, and posted them on
Search400.com. No longer do you need to search the Web for iSeries-
specific papers -- they're all here.
