This Week: In the forums
>> Loosing Client Access sessions intermittently -- What's going on here?
"Rmagnan" has 20 users on an NT server using Client Access with TCP/IP to connect to the 400. Recently all those on Client Access froze for a couple of minutes and then some of them lost one or more sessions, not all. The screen became pitch black. He says they "X'd" out the sessions, clicked the icons and were back. There weren't any error messages on the console, and DSPLOG showed "Session ended normally from a command of the work station." He has no idea what happened. Do you?

>> F-key to get to the top or bottom of a subfile
"RalphM" asks, "Is there a preferred way (in RPGIV and/or a DDS keyword) to allow the user to F-key to the top or bottom of a subfile?" "BrianF" and "DcsLee" both have suggestions -- check them out.

>> Limit user sessions
Is there a way to limit users to two sessions only? "MindNL" says yes. Read what he said.

Tip of the Week:
The danger of indiscriminately assigning special authorities
By Dan Riehl, Search400.com expert

A few months ago as I was perusing an iSeries Internet newsgroup (news://comp.sys.ibm.as400.misc) I was surprised to see a reference to solving spooled file control problems by assigning *SPLCTL (Spool Control) special authority to several end users. I quickly fired back my response saying that granting *SPLCTL special authority makes the user the god of all spooled files on the system, and that sensitive and private information could be compromised.

Special authorities are just that ... special. They are NOT object-level authorities that determine what files or programs you can access and manipulate. Instead, they provide the ability to perform certain operational and administrative functions on the iSeries. This article explains the special authorities and points out the main exposures if they are not assigned judiciously.
