Get up to speed on latest updates to DB2 UDB

Do you use DB2 UDB? If so, you won't want to miss Search400.com's latest webcast on DB2 UDB for the iSeries.

Guest speaker Doug Mack from IBM gives an interesting presentation on recent updates to DB2 UDB, including enhancements in V5R2 and how those enhancements relate to an overall strategy. Doug also discusses current data management trends, and he answers questions you may have on the compatibility of SQL stored procedures on DB2, how DB2 on the iSeries compares to other DB2 family members, how to use SQL-based applications with databases defined by DDS.

The format for this webcast is slightly different from those we've had in the past. When you log on to view to it, you will be seeing a recorded broadcast. By recording the event beforehand, the guest speakers can give longer, more in-depth presentations. Now they can address a subject thoroughly and not have their talks cut short.

Although this is a recorded event, you may still submit questions to the speaker anytime during your viewing of the webcast. You still click on the "Ask a Question" link in the bottom left corner of the presentation screen. The only difference is that the speaker will answer the questions offline, and the responses will be posted on Search400.com as an article.

We also provide an opportunity to download the speaker's presentation slides beforehand, so you can follow along with those during the event and refer back to them as needed.

We hope you like this new format. Feel free to send us your comments and opinions. And be sure to check our webcasts page for past and upcoming events.

>> Where to find edit function API examples
Neil Shapiro was looking for advice on using the numeric edit function APIs QECCVTEC, QECCVTEW, and QECEDT in RPG III. "Schreibr" came to Neil's rescue. Read what he had to say.

>> Wrap-around CL for SAVLIBBRM
"MANDRAX" is new to CL and OS/400 and is having trouble writing a wrap-around CL for an IBM command -- namely SAVLIBBRM. "CLKelly" had written a similar CL and shares his thoughts.

>> Using the EXTPROC keyword
"BijuBlue" wanted to know under what condition the EXTPROC keyword is used while calling a procedure in RPG ILE. "DougCMH" explained that EXTPROC is used when you are defining the prototype for a procedure that exists outside of the module or main program where you are coding the prototype. Check out this discussion thread for the complete explanation of the EXTPROC keyword.

Tip of the Week:
Abbreviated commands save precious time

No matter what your role, if you work on an iSeries or AS/400 you have to type a lot of commands. WRKACTJOB, WRKUSRJOB, WRKSPLF, DSPPFM ? the list is nearly endless. Most folks aren't perfect typists, and simple logic dictates that the longer the command name, the greater the possibility of mistyping it. Also, clearly, the longer the command name, the longer it takes to type. This time is probably minimal for just a single command, but add up the times for hundreds of commands a day and you will have a substantial chunk of time. Why not abbreviate those commands to something that's easy to remember and fast to enter?
