How HIPAA are you?
I just interviewed an iSeries systems administrator about how he's meeting the privacy provisions of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996). Complying seemed relatively easy for his shop, which I was glad to hear, but contradicted what I've read and what I've heard from other administrators.
The privacy part of this legislation, which requires businesses to protect electronically stored medical records and other personal health information created or maintained by healthcare-related companies ranging from doctors' offices to insurance companies, is forcing many iSeries users to scramble to secure their data. In fact, according to one source, compliance will cost the industry an estimated $3.8 billion, with security and privacy rules costing companies the most money because they will be so broad and require constant updates.
We haven't covered this topic much on Search400.com, but as the deadline for meeting the privacy provisions approaches (April 2003), you'll probably be reading more on our site about it and how it will affect you. In the meantime, check out the content we do have and take our poll.
For starters, we want to know: Are you ready? Are you in compliance or will you be soon? Let us know how this regulation is going to affect your business and what you're doing to comply. Are you unsure about whether you even need to be in compliance? Also, let us know if there are specific areas of HIPAA that you would like to see more written about. Even better: If you're already in compliance, what advice would you have for administrators who are about to embark on that journey? What one question do you have for the administrator who has already met the requirements? Send me your comments.

Spell checking with OfficeVision
"Dbardes" has OfficeVision on his iSeries. He found an object QDCT/US that is an object type "*SPADCT". He believes it's the dictionary. He'd like to write RPG code to access the dictionary and wonders if there is a way to use this tool. Do you know if there is an API that will facilitate access?

| Tip of the Week: |
Let e-RPG do the talking
With the advent of new handheld devices and enhanced
wireless technology every day, the need to be able to
communicate with clients other than Web browsers is
becoming more important, especially when users are on the
run and away from the office.
The good news is that as an RPG programmer, you already
have all the tools you need in the form of e-RPG, or
writing CGI programs using RPG. And if you're already
familiar with writing e-RPG programs to communicate with
Web browsers, then communicating with handheld devices is
as simple as changing the markup language that is used to
produce output.
In this tip Bradley V. Stone introduces you to the two
wireless standards commonly used today -- HDML and WML --
and shows you how to get started using HDML.
