Things are tough all over
You can't pick up a newspaper without feeling overwhelmed by the dire straits we're in. Internationally, there's a heightened alert for terrorism attacks, a possible war with Iraq and issues with North Korea's nuclear plans. In the U.S., the economy doesn't show any signs of recovering: Sales remain disappointing, job layoffs continue, salary increases on average are minimal, and the stock market continues its struggle to recover.
The only relief from the stress might come on the funny pages. At least there you can laugh at Dilbert, knowing that his woes are fictional.
For us in the real world, however, economic problems often translate into tough times at work -- budget cuts, less staff, and extra work on your part to fill the gap. Belts are being tightened all around. You only hope that you don't get squeezed too tightly.
I'm wondering how the economy is affecting you professionally. Has your budget been cut? Projects put on hold? Upgrades delayed? Are you out of work? Do you think a turnaround is in sight? Send me your comments, and let me know how you're holding up.

Receiving SMTP mail into a program
"CGross" asks, "There are lots of articles about setting up SMTP on iSeries and using it to send MIME-type e-mail. We have several applications that can send various types of files using the QtmmSendMail API. But how can we receive SMTP mail by program?" Site expert Tim Granatir and "sauvaje1" offer some help.

Getting started with WDSc
"Rjs395" needs your help. He's following the steps in SC09-26250-6 (Getting Started with WDSc) and keeps getting a "publishing error -- problems exist in project mappings" when he tries to test his WebFacing in "Testing your application" on P.50. Any ideas to help him run this sample project?

Leasing space on an iSeries
"Mkant76" needs to find some room on an iSeries to do some development work: nothing that will impact the system, just 100 to 200 objects all within one library. Site expert Tim Granatir suggested a couple companies that will lease space for a fee, but he thinks there's a free time-sharing site. Do you know if there is? |

Little-known feature of the CPYFRMIMPF command
When you're importing delimited data to the iSeries, such as a comma-delimited spreadsheet or data from a Unix or Windows NT system, the CPYFRMIMPF command is a huge timesaver. But even with this command, people still complain about null data, errors or formatting problems. Many are not aware that the CPYFRMIMPF command is also capable of helping with some of those types of problems. People overlook this capability because they don't know the functionality is there, and that's probably because of how the command does prompting. This tip highlights of few of the problem areas this command can help you with. |
