Keep ahead of the curve

Have you taken any time to check out Search400.com lately? Search400.com has the most up to date information and opinions about the iSeries marketplace and is updated constantly. Whether it's career, administrator or developer advice, Search400.com has the resources to find the answers to your questions.

Two areas I'd like to highlight are the new glossary and an addition to the Best Web Links section that brings together all of the chapter downloads we have offered in one easy and convenient place.

The new glossary
This is a great way to keep on top of all the new acronyms and older terms that you may not remember. This glossary is specific for the iSeries and is powered by our sister site Whatis.com. It is the easiest way to look up a specific term in the alphabet soup that has become our daily language.

The new chapter download section
Here you have access to all of the free chapter downloads that Search400.com offers, plus any new books to be offered this year. Check back often to get titles such as AS/400: System, Utilities, Database, and Programming, 2e and The MC Press Desktop Encyclopedia of Tips, Techniques and Programming Practices for iSeries and AS/400. These books are for sale on our site, but you can check out the free chapters first to get a sample of the useful information.

Make your job easier and keep ahead of the curve. Use the resources that are available to you on Search400.com.

This Week: In the forums
>> Remote printing on IBM Twinax 6400 printers
"AshokVerma" says they've been asked to relocate their iSeries 150 miles away from where the tech support will reside and support the systems. They use Twinax System Consoles to monitor their LPAR 820 iSeries, and all users are on the network via CA Express. And they have some IBM 6400 Twinax printers. Are there any issues or problems he should keep an eye out for?

>> Convert .doc to .pdf
"TRowell" has an application in RPG that creates a Word document by running Word on the PC attached via CA Express. The document is saved in the IFS on the iSeries as a .doc file. The problem is he doesn't want users to be able to modify the document -- just view it. How can he do this? Site expert Tim Granatir had some advice.

>> Performance Monitoring for iSeries
Are there any agents available on the iSeries that can be used to collect performance statistics from the platform, asks "amsAS400". They're looking for information such as CPU stats, memory stats and system stats. "QPFRADJ" has a suggestion.

Tip of the Week:
Achieve greater processing efficiency with delayed access paths
By Ron Turull

There is more than meets the eye to the Create Logical File (CRTLF) command. If you are accustomed to creating/compiling logical files by quickly typing option 14 and pressing Enter in PDM, you may be missing a lot. The same holds true if you type just CRTLF LIB/LGLFILE. Even if you prompt the Create Logical File command, you may be missing some important command parameters if you don't call them down with the F9 key.
