Become a WebSphere whiz

We've all heard of WebSphere, IBM's set of Java-based tools for creating and managing business Web sites. But few have mastered all the nuances of this increasingly popular package.

Do you want to find out more about WebSphere and its role in Web-enabling applications? Need advice on bringing your apps to the Web with the IBM WebFacing tool? Looking for hints on creating a Web-browser interface for your 5250 application? You've come to the right place. Search400.com has a collection of WebSphere resources to help you get, and keep, up to speed.

Search400.com is very privileged to have Web development expert Jim Mason on our panel of highly qualified iSeries experts. Each week Jim answers your toughest questions in the Ask The Expert section, and every month he writes our popular WebSphere Strategies tip. In addition, Jim is often found hanging around in the WebSphere & Web Development Forum, chatting with iSeries users. If you have a WebSphere question or concern, pop in and say hello. Jim's happy to assist you.

We've also collected a ton of time-saving tidbits and useful WebSphere shortcuts for you. You can browse our White Paper Section for Web development information, check out our ever-changing Best Web Links, and don't forget to plug WebSphere into the search box to search our site and Google for some great WebSphere information.

This Week: In the forums
>> Accessing stored data through ODBC
"Lokesh" had a Web-based application that needed to access data stored on the iSeries and had a few questions related to accessing data through ODBC. Thankfully, site expert Jim Mason and "Carter" were on hand to offer some advice.

>> CALLP to procedure hangs up
"Slvrdgn" is new to working with ILE. He's trying to access a subprocedure that's compiled into a service program from an ILE RPG application. Unfortunately, it just freezes on him. Do you have any idea what might be going on?

>> Create an iSeries login report
"Jaws" would like to request a summary report that would tell him who was on the iSeries system after 6 p.m. on weekdays and anytime during the week. "BootSector" knew just what to do.

Tip of the Week:
The proper way to transfer data to the iSeries
Most users want to pull data down from their iSeries. Those who want to push data back usually require specific clearance from IT. IT is leery of users returning data to their iSeries systems, and rightly so. Any time a file is changed on the iSeries without an audit trail of the changes, IT becomes nervous. What do you do if you need to return data to the iSeries? Here's a step-by-step guide.
