EXPERT ADVICE
Life quality vs. critical IT position
Vic Sbrega, career advice
Dear Vic,
I'm the manager of small iSeries shop. I'm happy with my position
at this time, but I wonder if it's time to move on to a more IT-
critical environment. How would you suggest moving to "bigger
things" while preserving my quality of life?
LIVE WEBCAST
Strategies, solutions and services for integrating UCCnet
Date & time: Thursday, Nov. 6, 1 p.m. EST (18:00 GMT)
Guest speaker: Thomas A. Smith, senior e-business training director
for the Association of Global Standards Administrators
UCCnet is not your grandfather's EDI. If your company needs to comply
with UCCnet and its supply-chain management registry, you need to get
up to speed on this new standard. Find out how to get started, where
to get training, and determine what solutions meet your needs.
LEARNING GUIDE
The facts about UCCnet
If you work for a supplier, there's no doubt that company will have
to become UCCnet-compliant -- if it isn't already. In the works for
a couple years now, UCCnet provides a global repository where
enterprises can register item data and share standardized,
synchronized supply-chain information. Your job: Getting all of
your company's data into the registry. How do you do that? These
resources will start you on your way.

Tech downturn brings a slump in humor, too
![]()
Top techies have long been known as pranksters, but it seems that
when revenues are down, Silicon Valley's full of frowns. A former
Apple Computer employee turned comic explains it this way: When
you're successful you're irreverent, and when you're not you're
obnoxious. Currently Intel, IBM and Sun are sponsoring satirical
Web sites that poke fun at competitors and themselves -- but unless
profits skyrocket the only thing that might put the "silly" back in
Silicon Valley would be installing Larry, Moe and Curly on IBM's
board of directors. Nyuk nyuk nyuk.
