You've disabled Active X, turned off Java, and set up a firewall.
But do you have virus scanning on your mail? If you use OS/400 mail,
a malicious message could undermine all of your other efforts. Don't
overlook your iSeries. Make sure you're covered with the first and
only mail scanner for OS/400 mail. Get Protected. Get StandGuard

Deny spammers server access - V5R2 update
by Rich Loeber

In a tip that was published last year, we provided information on how
to configure your iSeries system to use the SMTP server while denying
access to spammers. You do this by building a special trigger file
named QTMSADRLST in your QUSRSYS library and then creating entries in
different file members to either permit or deny mail relaying through
the OS/400 SMTP server.

Since then, IBM has completely changed the way SMTP relay control
works under V5R2. If you set up the old method on your system and
have since moved to V5R2, then that protection no longer works. You
will need to implement the new controls that are now easier to use
and are built into the SMTP server configuration process.

MSF PERFORMANCE ON THE ISERIES
"Sterd71" was having a few problems with MSF on his iSeries. His MSF
job was taking up 90% of the CPU. He's tried restarting SMTP and MSF
(with *resume & *clear) to no avail. Thankfully, "Unclegeoff" had a
similar problem in the past and offered some advice.

E-MAIL TO AN EXTERNAL ADDRESS
"Fdbarker" writes, "Our e-mail server is on Exchange. I have
configured my iSeries to send e-mail to the internal e-mail server.
However, I just haven't had any luck sending to an external e-mail
server. Where can I find the necessary steps to make this happen?"
Site expert Tim Granatir offers a few suggestions.

ISERIES USED TO RELAY SPAM
"Oldgrayprogrammer" has been running the SMTP server on his iSeries
for some time -- sending e-mail via the SNDDST command. He recently
got hit by a spammer who used his iSeries to relay SPAM. He was
looking for some good, concise information to help manage e-mail on
iSeries. "ShalomC," who has been working with the iSeries since 1988,
shares what works best for him regarding e-mail.

SMTP CONFIGURATION
"Rickk" currently has SMTP running successfully. He uses his PC-based
mail server to route the iSeries e-mail. However, his mail server is
being targeted by Orbz as a relay server. His management wants to
know if the iSeries -- through SMTP -- can e-mail directly without
using this mailer server. How can he do this? Site expert Tim
Granatir had some advice.

Do you know if your iSeries is at risk? Do you have the information
to know? From HIPAA to GLBA to Sarbanes-Oxley, government
regulations are asking about risk. For example, HIPAA requires that
a covered entity conduct an "accurate and thorough assessment of
potential risks and vulnerabilities...of electronic health
information".

At SkyView Partners we are introducing SkyView Risk Assessor, a
comprehensive software package for the iSeries. This package,
designed by Carol Woodbury, former OS/400 chief security architect
for IBM, offers a thorough appraisal of your security configuration
compared to best practice and a plan for addressing the
deficiencies. Put your security into action...with a plan. Visit
