Highlights from 2003

Search400.com had a tremendous year in 2003 thanks to you, our loyal readers. Not only did membership grow 14%, but also subscriptions to two of our popular tips -- administrator tip and security tip -- grew by nearly 8%.

Here's a look at some other things we've been up to this past year:

* Search400.com had a lot of success with its 21 webcasts, covering topics such as high availability, RPG programming, remote journal, FTP and UCCnet compliance. Didn't get a chance to attend these educational broadcasts? They're still available for you to listen at your leisure in our webcast library.

* We posted nearly 40 white papers on topics such as Tape Technologies for Midrange Systems, Transforming RPG to Java, Indexing Strategies for DB2 UDB for iSeries, and Backup and Recovery Strategies for iSeries. Our white paper library is always growing and is a great technical resource for our members.

* Search400.com's Ask the Expert section was also busy this past year. One of the site's more popular features, it receives about 145 questions each month from users looking for advice. And our many experts, who specialize in categories such as OS/400, security and application development, are more than willing to help you out.

* This year saw the launch of Search400.com's IT Insights column, written by John Brandt and The Value Manager. Each month they tackle issues affecting the IT industry, especially those important to iSeries users. Don't worry if you missed one. All past columns are available in our library.

* This year also marked the 15th anniversary of the AS/400-iSeries. To celebrate we took a look back to see how it's changed over the years, and we asked you to test your iSeries smarts in a quiz. Are you an iSeries know-IT all?

* Search400.com is always trying to keep you up to date on new technologies and trends. And recently we published the UCCnet Learning Guide. This guide was designed to help you learn about the intricacies of becoming UCCnet compliant, and what steps you need to make if you are a supplier struggling to implement these standards.

Stay tuned for more interesting and helpful features as we head into the new year.

Have a great holiday season.

There's a lot of talk about UCCnet and the need for suppliers to become compliant. Unfortunately, there's also a lot of confusion. Let us help you sort it out.

This Week: In the forums
>> Data retrieval from AIX system to the iSeries
"Bswann" recently upgraded his iSeries model 530 to V5R1. This upgrade caused a problem in using DRDA to retrieve data from an AIX system running DB2 V7.1 fix pack 2. He was looking for someone who knows of another way to retrieve the data by bypassing DRDA and SQL. Site expert Tim Granatir had a suggestion.

>> Advice needed for printing overlays
"Fenderfox" has just started using overlays. He created an overlay in Word to use with an RPG application in order to create a marriage license. He wonders how to control the text that prints from the iSeries print file to line up with the overlay. Is this a task you've recently mastered? Why not click over and help him out?

>> Unit attention error
One user writes, "On the primary side of my iSeries (in the SST option 'Work With Partition Status') if I change the LPAR IPL mode to normal and then do a 1 to Power on the LPAR, I receive a unit attention error. Is this a known error, or should the LPAR IPL mode always be left as manual?" "RMalloy" stepped in and helped him figure out what was going on.

Tip of the Week:
New ASP load-balancing commands
by Ron Turull

In V4R4 (OK, so they are not so new), IBM introduced a group of ASP load-balancing commands. If you are interested in high performance, you need to use these commands. The best part is they are exceptionally easy to use AND can be run while your system is active.
