Ringing in the new year with Java, Linux and WebSphere?

All of us like to start the new year charged and ready to go. It isn't always possible, but it's a noble goal. As IBM continues to transition the iSeries into what it claims is a more modern, adaptable system, the company is encouraging you to do the same (although not in necessarily subtle ways).

Of the many initiatives IBM pushed in 2003, three have taken center stage: Linux and open standards, WebSphere and e-business, and moving from RPG to Java.

Are you planning on taking on any of those initiatives this coming year? If so ...

  • Will you use the IBM approach or another?
  • How are you going about it (with or without your employer's assistance)?
  • Do you feel you are being forced into this direction. Why?
  • And, finally, if you do act on any or all of those initiatives, will it be worth it?

Let us know your take on this. Send your comments to Kate Evans-Correia, senior news editor, and take our related poll.

This Week: In the forums
>> Change the printer file page width
"BInocencio" wants to add a column to an existing printer file. However, the new column has caused the report to exceed 132 characters across. He thought that by specifying CPI(15) that the printer file would compile, but he gets compile errors indicating that some of the fields exceed the report width. Fortunately, "CLKelly" had an idea to help him.

>> Copy a spool file to a file, then back to a spool file
Is there a way to copy a spool file to a file, then back to a spool file while retaining the spacing, etc.? Yes, there is, says "iSeriesSE."

>> BRMS CL programming. Can it be done?
"Pantazis Pantazi" is interested in finding a way to expire tapes that have not taken all the objects of the library backup due to some error. He thought he could do it through CL, but he's unable to find any reference about BRMS CL programming. Does anyone out there have any information on this subject?

White paper
High Availability -- It's More Affordable Than You Think

It used to be that only the largest companies could cost-justify high availability. Well, that's changed. This paper explores why the total cost of ownership for true, full-featured high availability is now well within the realm of even small and medium-sized companies.
