Become a Search400.com site expert

When you get stuck on a problem at work, the first place you turn for help is usually a co-worker. Chances are he or she has a quick answer. The last thing you want to do is go slogging through IBM's Info Center or run a Google search and have to wade through thousands of possible links.

That's why so many of our members like Search400.com's Ask the Expert feature. Our group of experts are like the people you work with -- iSeries professionals in the trenches day after day managing systems, writing programs, installing new applications, etc. In addition, our experts love to help people. iSeries pros seem to have a special bond, so that when one is in trouble others come to help.

Search400.com is looking to add to its panel of experts. We're looking for programmers (RPG and Web), administrators and systems managers who would like to volunteer a few hours a month to help other iSeries professionals. There are several ways you can help: You can answer Ask the Expert questions, write Programmer tips, write WebSphere Strategies tips, write a column, help monitor the discussion forums or even be the guest speaker for webcasts. You can do as much as your schedule allows.

Being an expert also gives you an opportunity to become somewhat of a celebrity in the iSeries market. Once your name gets out there, people will start to recognize you for your expertise and that could lead to other opportunities in industry.

Are you interested? If so, simply fill out our online application and give us a little information about you, as well as your areas of expertise and what you might like to do on the site (write tips, answer questions, etc.). Then we'll be in touch.

I hope you consider this opportunity. It will be worth your while.

This Week: In the forums
>> Two overlapping windows in the same program
"iHansMeeuws" has a problem. He's trying to display two overlapping windows in RPG. The first window is no problem. But when the second window is displayed, he loses the full border and gets a border of points for the two visible windows. When he returns to the first window, he gets the nice window border again. Can you help him out?

>> Generic CHKOBJ type command (wildcards)
"Heartland" writes, "Is there a way, in a CL program, to check for the existence of a generic object? For example, I need to know if there are any devices that start with WDN." "DSPOBJD" offers some advice.

>> Problems starting test server for WebFacing
"BrendanF" was trying to upgrade to V5R1. He was able to get further with the WebFacing tool than he was with 5.0. The DDS was converted correctly, but when he ran the project, the test server in the client would not start. Web development expert Jim Mason helped him through the process.

Tip of the Week:
How to send inquiry messages and get replies
Few things are more frustrating than having to code an entire display file just to ask a user a quick question and get a reply. There is a better -- and easier -- way. Messaging.

In this tip, Ron Turull shows you how to take advantage of inquiry messaging on the iSeries by creating impromptu messages with APIs and command or RPG. Give it a try and see how much faster your inquiry and response times can be.
