FEATURED TIP
How to increase performance by grouping users into separate storage pools -- Part II
In Part I we discussed the benefits of putting high-activity users in their own storage pool. (A high-activity user is someone who presses the Enter key all day long, such as an order-entry employee.) Such users alone can be responsible for a majority of the transactions that your system processes each day. Making sure these employees never have to wait on the CPU is key to making them efficient.

We also learned about private storage pools and shared storage pools and how to route users to the storage pool you want. Now, let's take a look at how to set the two parameters that govern the performance of jobs in a storage pool, activity levels and pool size. In particular, we will determine these two numbers for the example private storage pool for our order-entry personnel.

Think virus outbreaks are someone else's problem? Think again. Many were surprised to learn that Mydoom was uncovered on the iSeries, but StandGuard Anti-Virus users were able to clean it right off. Could it still be sitting on your system? Get protected with StandGuard Anti-Virus, the "Product of the Year" in the Security category of the Search400.com 2003 Products of the Year awards.

 Technical Questions Answered

How to increase performance by grouping users into separate storage pools -- Part I
We've looked at how to monitor your system's performance and the basics behind tuning your system. Now, lets look at some specialized tuning techniques that can make the difference when trying to get your system to fall within standard performance levels.

How to track response time with the WRKACTJOB tool
To obtain maximum productivity from computer users, it is essential to limit the computer's interactive response time to one second or less. Using the Work with Active Jobs (WRKACTJOB) screen you can see detailed performance data for each job listed.

Use WRKSYSSTS to monitor your system -- Part I
A well-tuned machine pool is essential for good performance. Use the Work with System Status (WRKSYSSTS) command to monitor and maintain it, as well as other pools on the iSeries.

Use WRKSYSSTS to monitor your system -- Part II
There are two "meters" of performance on the Work with System Status (WRKSYSSTS) display: page fault rates and job transition rates. Making sure those fall within acceptable levels is the essence of using the WRKSYSSTS display to tune your system.
