In a far-reaching settlement that covers antitrust and patent issues, Microsoft has agreed to pay $1.6 billion to Sun Microsystems. The longtime rivals also reached deals in a number of other areas. In a related announcement, Sun said it would slash its work force by 9%.

New York holds spam 'tasteless' test (The Associated Press)

The Consumer Protection Board of New York is holding a sort of spam beauty contest, and it is inviting people to enter examples of the most outrageous e-mail scams that have invaded their inboxes. So, what's the first-place prize? Nothing. And for second place? The winner gets bologna, which consumer advocates hope people realize e-mail offers such as the Nigerian lost fortune really are.
