Power5 OS/400 servers to ship by end of June

Last week's IBM earnings call lead to an inadvertent revelation by Big Blue's CFO. IBM Chief Financial Officer John Joyce reportedly let the cat out of the bag when he said IBM would be shipping its Power5-based iSeries servers by the end of June.

If IBM wants to maintain its iSeries business -- let alone grow it -- in 2004, it will have to beef up its efforts to battle Intel's dominance in the low end. If Intel wasn't enough competition, Microsoft is picking off IBM's entry-level fruit as well.

Currency helps pump up IBM's first quarter
[The Four Hundred]
The nosedive in the value of the dollar on the global market helped boost IBM's earnings last week, according to this report. IBM's booked sales were up 11%, but if those numbers were based solely on U.S. currency the result would have been closer to 3%.
