Time-saving tips for finding the right command
[Search400.com]
by Ron Turull
Effective use of commands is essential to the efficient use of OS/400. But with well over 1,000 commands in the base operating system alone, finding the right command is sometimes an arduous process. Over the years we have all developed techniques to make this process less laborious. Here are a few of my favorites.
Abbreviated commands save precious time
[Search400.com]
No matter what your role, if you work on an iSeries you have to type a lot of commands. WRKACTJOB, WRKUSRJOB, WRKSPLF, DSPPFM . . . the list is nearly endless. There is an old technique that has been around the AS/400 (iSeries) world a while that can help you handle all the commands.

TOPICS: Psst! Pass me your cheat sheet
When it comes to working with the iSeries, many of you have shortcuts or cheat sheets that you use religiously to help you with your routine tasks. I'd like to compile some of these cheat sheets and publish an online guide for all of our iSeries users to use.
We're looking for anything that helps make your day run a little smoother. Send your cheat sheets to Assistant Editor Deb Tart and include a brief description of what the sheet consists of and how it saves you time. Here's one of our own to get you started: Common iSeries commands
The first 10 people to send in their cheat sheets will receive a Search400.com hat.
TOPICS: Programmer's Discussion Forum -- Interact with other programmers
Are you an iSeries programmer with questions? Join your peers
in our Programmer Forum to ask and answer questions about XML,
COBOL, CL, ILE, Web development, Java and much more.
TOPICS: Best Web Links -- Development on the iSeries
If you find yourself stuck trying to write a program for the iSeries, you'll find plenty of advice here. Programming languages covered include RPG, ILE, Java, COBOL and Visual Basic. We have sections devoted to PC development and open-source code, and, if creating applications for the Web is your game, there's a section on that, too.
