The open source JBoss Web application server is gaining a loyal following in the Java development community, and it is even being used by a handful of iSeries shops. JBoss provides the same types of server-side Java functions as WebSphere or BEA's WebLogic, but like Apache Tomcat, it's free for the taking.

JR Wood, a grower and manufacturer of frozen fruit products, replaced its old EDI system with a new one from EXTOL, which improved its workflow and allowed it to synchronize its product data with its customer, Wal-Mart, via UCCnet.

You may think it's funny when your co-workers make mistakes. But when Jack spills coffee into his keyboard or Jill opens up an attachment that lets in Netsky, your brain feels their pain -- whether the rest of you realizes it or not. Researchers in the Netherlands wired up some noggins and found that people who watched their peers making computer snafus experience the same kind of brain activity as the people making the mistakes. So much for Schadenfreude.
