The price is right -- or is it?
IBM has a new pricing strategy that is meant to make it easier for ISVs to sell the iSeries (excuse me, and i5) to customers outside the platform (read Microsoft customers). The idea is to lower the price of the platform and therefore eliminate any argument that an iSeries is too expensive.
Although lowering prices is a good solid strategy to move product, this isn't Wal-Mart nixing the cost of a lamp from $14.97 to $12.77. We all know how complex IBM's pricing can be. We all know that the price of an iSeries is never the price of an iSeries.
Or is it?
According to a poll we ran last week, 47% of you say it's about time IBM lowered the price -- and we're sure IBM will be pleased to hear you agree with this new strategy. But the bigger question for me now is do you believe the new pricing model will work its way into other areas, say services, upgrades, processors, and licenses? Or will IBM continue to gouge you on price? In general, do you really believe it will help fuel sales? Will it make it easier for you to sell your CIO on an iSeries?
What's your take on this? E-mail me and then take our poll if you haven't already.

COBOL copying DDS with alias replacing
"Michael3658" had created a DDS and specified a DDS alias for each field. It copied the DDS and specified the aliases, but it didn't do the replaces. He also tried using the REPLACE command and that didn't work either. He contacted IBM and found out what he was doing wrong.

Help needed to debug a batch program
"Seymour" needs to debug a program that runs in batch, and he's running into problems. He read about using STRSRVJOB and then doing the STRISDBG statements. He wonders if there are certain parms that the CLP or RPG must be compiled with in order to debug it in batch. Do you know? Click over and help him out.

User profile over 10 characters?
Search400.com member Anne Nelson wonders if IBM will ever expand the user profiles beyond 10 characters on the iSeries. All of her network file servers and e-mail systems are converting from an eight-character convention to a full name. She'd like to convert the iSeries IDs at the same time. Her users are getting frustrated by having to have different IDs for everything. "OldRPGMan" doesn't think it will ever happen, but he recommends contacting IBM. What are your thoughts? |

WebSphere Strategies Tip
Finding the Value in SQL and WebSphere
by Paul Holm and Colin Slade
A frequent problem encountered in Web application development is when attempting to allow optional selection criteria. Many applications allow users to select records based on selection criteria. The big trick, however, is to get the search to ignore values in the search if the user does not specify them. This article details how this type of search can be coded. View other tips by Paul
