Cheat sheets, downloads and tips (oh my!)
A few weeks ago we asked if you would share your cheat sheets and tips for making your jobs a little easier. And boy did you deliver. Dozens of you sent in your own personal cheat sheets or told us about Web sites that had some great how-to's.
We took all of those, added a few of our own tech tips, combined a handful of links from the Web, and mixed in a few fun articles (just to spice things up). The result: Search400.com's favorite iSeries cheat sheets.
This winning recipe has something for every type of iSeries pro -- programmers, system administrators, database administrators, security administrators and more. Thank you to everyone who shared his or her cheat sheets with us. We've learned that for many of you, these guides are more precious than family heirlooms. We hope others get as much use out of them as you.
If you have other cheat sheets or tips you'd like to share, e-mail them to us and we'll add them to the listing.
Enjoy!

Limit the number of sign-ons a person can have
"iSeriesSE" would like to limit the number of sign-ons a user can have. Almost all of his users need two or three sessions to do their work efficiently. However, some use up to six or seven -- shooting up the interactive job counts -- and those are the culprits he's after. "CLKelly" and "RMalloy" have some good ideas.

CHOICEPGM to return value not working
Tim Hallen writes, "I have a PARM KWD(ASOF) in a command, specifying CHOICEPGM(CHOICE) to a CLP which simply retrieves a *DTAARA, and I wish to return that value to the KWD(ASOF) in the PARM statement for a "default" to the user. The CHOICE program executes, and the value passed back shows up in the "choice text" to the right of the ASOF keyword. I know about the "C" or "P" in byte 21 of the first of the two PARMS into CHOICE, but it is always "C". How can I get the value returned into the ASOF
keyword field in the command?" "Alco251" has one suggestion. Do you have another?

Need help with DNS problems on the AS/400
Chris Villanueva says they have multiple locations, each with its own local AS/400 and Windows server. The AS/400 is configured to use the local Windows server as the primary DNS server and their corporate Windows server is the secondary DNS server. During occasions when the local Windows server is down, the AS/400 doesn't seem to be failing over to the corporate Windows server for DNS services. Can anyone help? |

More hiding places for malicious code
by Rich Loeber
The last time I wrote, I discussed tracking down hidden trigger programs on your system that could be just waiting for a specific event to release their malicious payload. But, as I've thought about this issue since then, there are other places where someone could "hide" a call to a malicious program that could get easily overlooked. Let's look at two other areas of concern -- the system job scheduler and exit programs. |

How to use DB2's cross-reference files to help manage your database -- Part II
by Ron Turull
In part I of this series, Ron introduced you to the eight database cross-reference files that the AS/400-iSeries automatically maintains for the database files on your system. In part II he looks at a real-life example of how you can put cross-reference files to work in your shop: locating a logical file to use in an application.
