Test your smarts: Who's who in the iSeries community?
Sharpen your pencils. It's time to see how much you know about the big players in the iSeries community.
IBM introduced the AS/400 in 1988, and since then several people have had a hand in its greatness. Some you know just from their reputations and stories you've heard, and some you've even chatted with while at COMMON conferences. So let's find out how much you really know about them:
Do you know who created the computer architecture used in today's iSeries? Who's the guy in the cowboy hat you see regularly at COMMON conferences? Who is known as Mr. OS/400 Security?
Take our newest quiz, Who's who in the iSeries world, and test how much you really know about the people who've helped make the iSeries-AS/400 the legend that it is.

JSP vs. PHP -- what's your pick?
"Doo4yoo" plans to migrate part of his Web service from .NET Data to another scripting language, mainly due to insufficient performance. He would like to know what other iSeries professionals recommend, JSP or PHP. What do you suggest?

Moving data from on iSeries system to another
"Moehudd" needed to load his data from a model 720 to an 820 and didn't know where to start. The 720 was running V4R5 and the 820 has base code for V4R5. Thankfully, "Manly1" had a few suggestions for him.

Limit authority to financial files
"Robert WS" writes, "I need to limit the authority to our financial files for the programmer staff due to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). We want to be able to read the data but not change it. When I tested one file by adding an individual profile to the file object and made it READ rights only, the person could not compile a program over that file. I added operational rights and then they could change the data. I will probably end up using an authorization list, but I am not sure what the correct
authority level is that allows only reading, but yet still enable it to compile." How can he do this? "RMalloy" had some advice. |

Special features make creating tables simple
by Ron Turull
With the help of prompting and basing table support, creating conversion tables and sort sequence tables is now a very intuitive process. No longer must you count your finger along the SEU screen making sure your hex codes are in the correct position.
Tables are used extensively on the AS/400-iSeries. Although most of their use is under the covers, there are many instances in everyday programming when tables -- both conversion tables and sort sequence tables -- are very handy tools.
