Help wanted: Relief from job woes
As a news editor covering the iSeries industry, I know that stories I write about job-related issues generate a lot of interest. Whether the story is about salaries, offshore outsourcing or the lack of young professionals knowledgeable with OS/400, I know several of you will click over to read it. Topics such as those are hot no matter what the market. People, regardless of their professional background, get passionate when talking about their livelihood.
Still, I was surprised when a recent Search400.com State of the Industry survey found that 28% of the 253 respondents cited career and training issues as their most difficult challenge -- more than budgets, more than writing new applications, more than complying with regulatory issues. Honestly, I expected systems management to be the number one problem. I was way off base.
Unfortunately, the survey doesn't follow up with the question, "Why?" Is it lack of jobs, is it lack of places to get training, or is it that your jobs are being threatened by outsourcing? If you find career development and training to be your biggest challenge, please send me a note and tell me why -- why it's more challenging than budget cuts, migration issues, systems management or any of the other zillion things you have going on in your shop. Send your comments to me, Kate Evans-Correia, senior news editor. And take our poll on career headaches.

Change data type for FTP transfer
"Michaelc2" writes, "I have a physical file that contains a field of data type "packed." If I connect via FTP and download this file, that field is not readable. What's the best way to translate this field?" "RingerSoftware" has a suggestion.

Date calculations
"Pgm33a" was looking for a routine to help him find the third Friday of every month. Lucky for him, "Bhullar" was able to help him out.

IFS cleanup
"Bresinj" says they've started using the IFS to put PDF files into directories, but it's getting to be a pain to manually remove the entries after 30 days. Does anybody know how to automate the process or if there's a tool that can help? |

But then there are times when errors are expected and you don't want the program to end. What do you do then? This month Paul Tuohy shows you how to handle those errors at the operation level. |

Security Tip: Are your terminal sessions secure?
Like most modern systems, the iSeries requires a user profile and password before you can log on and use the system. You might think that this simple requirement would always ensure that only authorized users have access to your system. But with the proliferation of PCs, it is not always that simple. In this tip, Rich Loeber explains how to protect your PC terminal sessions.
