What does an Oracle takeover of PeopleSoft mean to JDE users?
A federal judge's decision late last week to rule in favor of Oracle Corp. in its quest to takeover PeopleSoft could have some interesting implications for JD Edwards (JDE) customers.
While this most recent ruling doesn't mean it's a done deal, the threat that Oracle will take over PeopleSoft, which purchased JDE just over a year ago, is that much more real. Now, users are facing the very real possibility that their ERP apps will soon be owned by Oracle. There are only a handful of people who know what will happen then -- and they're not talking.
As a JDE/PeopleSoft user, does this latest ruling concern or affect you? Has this 18-month legal battle prevented you from moving forward with purchases of PeopleSoft applications? Will last week's ruling change any of that?
While we wouldn't ask you to predict the future, we would like to get a sense of what you think is down the road for you as a JDE customer. Would a takeover by Oracle be a good or bad thing? Are you taking a wait-and-see approach or are you taking action -- looking for new vendors? And finally, how do you think a takeover would affect IBM's relationship with Oracle and would that have any impact on you? Please share your comments with us. Send them to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]. Then take our poll: If Oracle takes over PeopleSoft . . .

Backup tape copies
Search400.com member Ryan Ferreri writes, "In preparation for a business continuity test, I would like to make two extra copies of our option 21 full-system save. DUPTAP would work, but I have only one 1/4-in. tape drive. Is there a way to create two extra copies of a tape without doing two extra system saves?" Do you know?

Printing from the iSeries to a printer in Windows
"Macreitz430" wondered if there was any way to print from the iSeries login ID to a printer listed in Windows. Thankfully, "JTaylor" was on hand and knew just what to do. |

Name that constraint
by Paul Tuohy
I am a big fan of Referential Integrity -- both Referential Constraints and Check Constraints. They remove a lot of code from my programs and provide the added benefit of ensuring that the constraint rules will be applied to any other applications that "need" to access my database.
But there is one annoying detail with using Referential Integrity in RPG programs. A constraint violation is notified as a file I/O error, but it does not identify which constraint caused the problem. So let's review a couple of methods for having your RPG program provide a meaningful message to the user when there is a constraint violation. |
