Company loyalty has its limits
How loyal are you to your employer? Given the fact that so many of you have been displaced through outsourcing and budget cuts, I wouldn't bat an eye if you said "not very." But given feedback a fellow editor of mine received when posing the same question to his readers, I realized the issue was not likely so cut and dry.
Specifically, his question was about the appropriate length of time someone should stay at a job after he's received extensive employer-paid training. His bag of responses (which were mostly from DBAs) was mixed and ranged from outrage at the thought to it being perfectly legit to bag it as soon as a new job came up.
What do you think? Should iSeries pros look out for themselves if a new and better job comes along or do they owe their employer some time? Is it respectable or ethical to accept a new job after your employer goes through the rigors of helping you upgrade your job skills? Or is it simply bad form? Is it disloyal?
We'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on this controversial topic, particularly if you've been in a similar situation and had to make the decision to stay or leave. Send your comments to me, Kate Evans-Correia, then take our poll.

Take control of Query
Most iSeries sites have a lot of Query/400 users, and most iSeries sites have to put up with the headache of users running the killer interactive query that brings response times to its knees. What can you do to make this situation better? Paul Tuohy shows you how to create your own version of the WRKQRY command that allows you to determine how much time should be allotted for interactive queries. |
