iSeries users' holiday wish list

For those of us living in the U.S., Thanksgiving is over. We've given thanks for all that we have and stuffed our faces with turkey and all the fixings. Now it's time to turn our attention to the next major event -- the holiday shopping season.

Nearly everyone has something they would love to receive this year. Some want jewelry or an iPod, some want a new notebook or digital camera, and some just want cash. What iSeries users want, however, doesn't come gift-wrapped. What they want is a more substantive -- has much more meaning.

They want respect and recognition. They're tired of being told that their iSeries or AS/400 is being phased out to make room for a Windows server. Do the people making those decisions understand the power of the iSeries? Do they realize they get so much more for their money when they purchase an iSeries?

iSeries users also want a viable job market. For too long they've watched while their jobs were given to workers overseas or to foreign workers in the U.S. with H1-B visas. And to make it worse, often they've had to train the new person before being given their walking papers.

They want money in their budgets for training. They're already considered dinosaurs. How can they expect to shatter that image and improve their skills if they can't get the training they need?

There's one thing on their wish list that could help with all of those things. iSeries users want IBM to go out there and tell everyone about the platform -- advertise it, promote it, market it. Everyone should know what an iSeries is. Make it a household name like Windows is. It's time to stop preaching to the choir. The choir already knows how great the machine is.

Tips from Search400.com members -- Don't forget to go in and rate these tips
>> Mixing free format code with embedded SQL
When mixing embedded SQL with free format RPG, a programmer has to constantly place a "/end-free" before each SQL and "a /free" after the SQL code. This also creates a difficult-to-read portion of code. To alleviate this, Search400.com member Bill Bruner has come up with a workaround. Check it out.

>> Create an iSeries Access image and update it with the latest service pack
There's an easy way to create an iSeries Access image that can be used for PC-Client installations and to load the latest service pack. It is called "Tailored Install." Check out this tip sent in by Search400.com member Jean-Marie Sauvageot to learn how to set up the Tailored Installation process.

>> SQL update a field in one file from a field in another file
Search400.com member Michelle Hendrie says, "You can easily update a field in one file with SQL by using a field in another file where unique field matching is possible." Read this tip to see how it's done.

How to save, restore the screen -- the quick and easy way
by Ron Turull

In the last installment, Ron Turull introduced you to Dynamic Screen Manager (DSM). This time he turns his attention to a couple of DSM APIs. These two APIs can be used to take a "snapshot" of the screen, save it and restore it later using the saved data.
