Is software pricing the next vendor battleground?
[by Kate Evans-Correia]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

When you're a reporter covering a conference, a lively lunchtime conversation can be the highlight of your day -- maybe the entire event. During a conference in Las Vegas two weeks ago, I hit the jackpot -- at the lunch table that is. I asked a simple question to the guy sitting to the left of me, "Is software pricing an issue within your organization?" While I could have guessed his answer, the response from the rest of the table took me by surprise. Of course pricing is an issue, but they were angry about it. They were fed up, and they weren't going take it anymore.

Gartner analysts warn that software pricing is indeed a "thorny issue," particularly for ISVs. Change is absolutely necessary -- but how? That was the big question. And while some vendors are responding by "digging in their heels," some major vendors are rethinking their pricing. But it's hardly enough. Today, IT managers have the leverage to demand more, and vendors know it. As a result, I believe software pricing will be the next big differentiator among vendors.

Do you agree? Are you fed up with the way software is priced? Are you paying more than you should? Does the complexity of pricing plans drive you crazy? Do you believe vendors are starting to make good-faith efforts to change? Let me know what you think. Send your comments to me, Kate Evans-Correia, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and then take our poll.

Using keyword IN in Dynamic SQL WHERE clause

"Naturegal" writes, "In an RPGLE program I am using embedded SQL. I would like a Where clause that says:

WHERE BankCode in (:BankList)

And I want BankList to be a dynamic list of banks selected by the user. BankCode is defined as 4,0 decimal and BankList is defined as Character, since it may have several banks (1000, 2000, 3000). When I try to compile it, I get Comparison operator = operands not compatible." What should she do?

ADMINISTRATOR TIP: How to take advantage of DSM -- even in a non-ILE shop
by Ron Turull

In the last two installments (DSM lets you build screens and windows on the fly and How to save, restore the screen -- the quick and easy way) we explored the use of Dynamic Screen Manager (DSM), which comprises a large set of APIs. Specifically, in the last tip, we saw how quick and simple it is to save and restore the screen using two DSM APIs, QsnSavScr and QsnPutBuf. The only drawback was that it required your application to be written in an ILE language. This week we will introduce a "helper" program you can put to use immediately to accomplish the same thing from a non-ILE program.
