iSeries blunders
[by Debra Tart]

"Whoops! I can't believe I did that!"

We've all been there at one time or another, having to explain how or why on Earth we did something so stupid. And when it comes to working with your iSeries, I'm sure you all have one or two blooper stories to share. So, what do you say? Care to share your biggest goof-up of the year? (I promise to use only first names in my follow-up article.)

Have you ever tried to use a mouse on a 5250 terminal? Ever hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and the iSeries just kept on going? Or maybe you've closed the window, but when you've reopened it, it wanted you to sign on again.

If you do share your story, there's a chance you could turn that lemon into lemonade. Your goof-up just might win you a prize. That's right, the person who sends in the "whopper of all whoops" will win a $25 Amazon.com gift certificate. Don't delay. Don't be shy. Claim your fame before Monday, Dec. 27, and you could be our winner.

Remember: By sharing your tale, you'll help other iSeries users avoid the same mistakes.

Happy holidays,
Deb

ASK THE EXPERTS: Making a record insert with SQL
[Kent Milligan, iSeries technology specialist in PartnerWorld for Developers, iSeries, IBM]

A user writes, "When making a record insert with SQL (Insert into values) from the JDBC Toolbox driver, Visual Explain and Optimizer messages shows a table scan with reason T1(no index) for the access plan. Why does DB2 make table scans and show this reason code?" Read what DB2 UDB expert Kent Milligan said.

PROGRAMMER TIP: The ins and outs of constraints
By Paul Tuohy

A couple of months ago we tackled the subject of identifying the names of constrant violations in RPG programs. Before you can do that, however, you need to understand how constraints work. So, let's take a closer look at constraints, what they are and how you define them.

WEBSPHERE STRATEGIES: Switch from Internet Explorer to Firefox?
By Jim Mason

Firefox offers some great improvements over Internet Explorer, such as the ability to suppress images and tabbed browsing, but watch out if you're using WebFacing. Because IBM writes all its software using Explorer, you'll have to stick with that browser when running IBM software.

IN THE FORUMS: FTP error codes
For tracking FTP errors, you will hardly find any messages that you can monitor via the MONMSG command. What can you do instead? Click over and find out.
