Is the iSeries becoming like the Mac?
[by Michelle Davidson, editor]

It seems Microsoft has set its sights on a new target -- the iSeries. A few weeks ago Microsoft formed an alliance -- the Midrange Alliance Program -- with Fujitsu, Electronic Data Systems and a half-dozen other companies to try to persuade businesses to look at Windows-based alternatives to iSeries servers. Their key reason, they say, is that fewer developers are writing applications for the platform.

That sounds a lot like the line you hear when comparing Apple's Mac to Windows-based desktops. I've been a Mac user since the beginning, and whenever I talk with a Windows user about Macs vs. Windows machines that person always says, "But there isn't any software for Macs." Give me a break. As a professional, what do you need? Microsoft's Office Suite? Adobe Acrobat? Adobe Photoshop? A Web browser? E-mail? All of those run on a Mac. If you want more things, such as games, you can get them. You just have to look for them.

As for iSeries apps, sure there are fewer these days, but there are still plenty out there. Third-party vendors make up for what IBM doesn't produce, and it seems there are more business partners every day. And don't forget all the programmers who write their own applications to run on the iSeries.

Another thing iSeries servers and Macs have in common is people's thoughts on purchasing them. Like Macs, iSeries servers cost more up front. Sure, you can buy Windows-based machines for less, but how reliable are they? How secure are they? How often do they need to be replaced? Which one gives you better return on your investment?

Microsoft is trying to do to iSeries users what it has done to Mac users -- convince them that their platform is on the way out and that it holds the key to their survival. What do you think? Take our poll or send your comments to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED].
