Best iSeries products of 2004
[by Michelle Davidson, editor]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm pleased to announce the winners of Search400.com's Products of the Year Awards for 2004. After weeks of evaluating products in six major categories, we have selected the Gold, Silver and Bronze winners. Our goal: to help you choose products you should include on your "A" list for evaluation.
Winners were selected from nominations submitted by our vendor community and by our team of editors. An independent panel of judges, which included industry experts, iSeries professionals and Search400.com editors, evaluated the products. Evaluations were based on the products' innovation, performance, ease of integration, ease of use and manageability, functionality and value.
In the group of winners you'll see products that are completely innovative. You'll see products that strike a chord with small and midsized businesses in terms of ease of use, as well as cost. None are perfect for all iSeries shops, but we think you'll agree that they all have valuable attributes. And when matched to the right task in the right environment, each product advances the state of the art in iSeries computing.
Without further adieu, here are the iSeries Products of the Year for 2004.
* Application Development Tools
* Backup and Recovery Tools
* Business-to-Business Solutions
* Document/Image Management Software
* High-Availability Products
* Security Software

ASK THE EXPERTS:
Run multiple SQL statements
[Kent Milligan, iSeries technology specialist in PartnerWorld for Developers, iSeries, IBM]
Is it possible to run multiple SQL statements within interactive SQL? DB2 UDB expert Kent Milligan says no. Use the iSeries Navigator SQL Script window, he says.

TIP:
How does RPG talk to a browser?
By Paul Tuohy
You know that most applications are moving towards a browser interface. IBM tells you that the way to go is with Websphere Application Server, JSPs and Java Servlets. But there is an easier way to program for the Web -- use your existing RPG skills. With those and just a little knowledge of HTML, you can be programming for the Web in next to no time.
TIP:
Controlling remote command processing
By Rich Loeber
One of the cardinal rules of securing your iSeries-AS/400 system is to prevent users from having open access to the OS/400 command line unless absolutely necessary. A knowledgeable PC user, using PC-based software tools such as iSeries Access, can run commands on your system without obtaining a sign-on screen and command line. In my book, that is a significant security exposure.
IN THE FORUMS:
Error with batch spool files
"Pankaj" has a batch job that produces spool files say up to 20,000, but after creating 9,999 spool files, he gets an error that the "Job can not create any more spool files." What's going on? "MindNL" has a suggestion.
TIP CONTEST:

Show off your love for your iSeries with this month's awesome prize package. Submit a tip for a chance to win an iSeries.mySeries shirt, bumper sticker and temporary tattoo.
