FROM THE EDITOR

When will ERP users be able to relax?
[by Matt Stansberry, news editor]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello, iSeries users. My name is Matt Stansberry, and this is my first editor's note as news editor on Search400.com. I come from a background in writing about the facility management industry, addressing the concerns regarding how the physical environment and IT meet. I look forward to getting your input on a number of topics, specifically the one I've addressed below.

With the Oracle vs. SAP competition heating up, and no real reconciliation in sight between Oracle and IBM, ERP users are wondering what happens next.

IBM rolled out a software package last month that's designed to enable SAP resources to be virtualized on iSeries frameworks. Big Blue is also reportedly working on a SAP-specific version of DB2.

The writing on the wall seems obvious. IBM is likely to tap SAP for its main ISV. But what will the next step be? And what will it mean for PeopleSoft and JDE users in iSeries shops? When will ERP users in transition be able to stop holding their breath?

Fill me in on how you see this playing out. Send your comments to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

-- Matt

Need help printing directly from the iSeries

"Dantheband" writes, "We want to use a third-party software package to design forms, create a PCL (printer control language) file with it and then merge that PCL file with AS/400 data to print the forms natively from the AS/400." Can you help? Send your advice in an e-mail, and we'll post the answer.

ASK THE EXPERTS: Looking for an upgrade shortcut
[Richard J. Belles, iSeries systems manager, Sysco Corp.]

A user has an 830 running V5R2, and he's purchased an i5 running V5R3. IBM's suggested route is to upgrade the 830 to V5R3, but he doesn't have much time. Is it possible to migrate to V5R3 on the new machine and convert/upgrade once there? Read what site expert Richard Belles said.

TIP: New, undocumented Query function can boost your productivity
By Ron Turull

If the use of Query for iSeries is a part of your daily iSeries chores, then a new function introduced in V5R3 could spell big gains. The new function -- Length -- returns the length of its argument, and it is essential when transferring data to other systems.
