Hi Ralf This is nice to know, thanks. I thought perhaps that LADSPA plugins only required ALSA to work? And yes pipewire is still a work in progress, however I haven't found bugs or encountered weird behavior yet. I have it installed as a telegram-desktop dependency on Arch Linux, so I might as well install pipewire-jack, which is a drop-in replacement for standalone jack. I found out pw-play works nicely (like aplay), I haven't tried pw-record yet. Hi, you need a jack compatible host application to load audio plugins such as LADSPA or LV2 plugins, jack by itself can't integrate plugins. However, Ardour for example can be used with jack or plain ALSA and it's also a host for LADSPA and LV2. Pipewire seems not to be without issues and probably not ready for a reliable recording environment yet. Kevin, I don't know how to do that anymore, if I ever did. I've used Jack for years. In general it works for me but it is a bit finicky. As I say, software plugins in a real-time data path aren't something I ever do anymore. If I really think I need a compressor when recording it's going to be hardware which has its limitations as per that specific hardware device. However careful recording with good levels shouldn't ever be a noise floor issue so I just record softer and boost as necessary. I use Mixbus, the for-pay version of Ardour. I have general workflow templates that make getting set up easy, and frankly I'm recording so seldomly anymore that I'm not even current with much of Linux audio anymore. The alsa-users list used to be a very lively list. Today it's terribly quiet. Probably everyone who could help you is either off in a forum somewhere or winding down like me in retirement. Thank you for your kind reply, Mark. The suggestions you gave me are surely helpful, and I will study in deep some of the things you mentioned. I agree with you that applying a compressor as part of post-production would be the most efficient way of having the audio recorded the way I want. I am looking at jack too, i'll eventually install pipewire-jack as I am already running on pipewire, I'll look up for jack-compatible plugins. I'd still like to try implementing this with plain ALSA though, just to learn and experiment with it. Let me know if you know how to do it this way too! A lot of this depends on your monitoring chain. I Generally find that an uncompressed vocal sent through a cheap hardware reverb in the monitor chain is a great way to approach the problem of getting a good dry vocal on disk. Once the vocal is on disk you can compress it anyway you want. At that point it's just numbers. [Alsa-user] How do I set up a filter/plugin?
Hello everyone,
I own a Scarlett Solo 3rd gen USB audio board, and I would like to use
a compressor
plugin from the package "alsa-plugins", Arch Linux. The goal is to
apply this effect
to my voice when I'm recording, always.
I set up my computer to always assign the Scarlett an index of 0, and
the integrated
intel chipset an index of 1, by adding two rules on /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf.
So far I understood I have to create a slave alsa device, to which the plugin is
applied/attached somehow, and this is where I get lost though.
My /etc/asound.conf file looks like this, as I wanted the USB board
always playing
and recording at 32Bit/320kHz:
pcm.scarlett {
type hw
card "Scarlett Solo USB"
device "hw:0,0"
slave hqaudio
}
pcm_slave.hqaudio {
pcm scarlett
format S32_LE
channels 2
rate 32
}
I'm not quite sure this is correct, though. The compressor plugin I'd
like to use is
named "dysonCompress", it should be shipped with alsa-plugins package.
I could not
find documentation I could understand about this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
