RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family History Expo

2010-09-30 Thread Jacki G.
I most likely will not make it to the restaurant, but I will definitely be
at the expo. I am looking forward to meeting as many of you as I can. So
far, I've only met Celeste. She was kind enough to help me find my great
grandparent's graves in Hayward and serve my mother and I a very nice
portuguese lunch.

I think I will probably make my own name tag that identifies me as a member
of the "Azores Google Group" with a Portuguse flag on it. So if any of you
spot a middle aged blond women sporting a name tag with green and red on it,
it's probably me. So please, introduce yourself.

Did any of you receive anything from the expo like a ticket or something to
get in? I didn't so I'm hoping that's because we just sign in at the door. I
have my email confirmation from when I registered.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Bermudian Portuguese, furtadi, parents of august furtadi & angelina furtadi born massasz, bbr#323,851 and 1st Pimental birth 1905

2010-09-30 Thread Tish M
Hi,
I sent my cousin an email to show her all of her work was not in vain, and
that indeed it is being used by people to trace their ancestors.
This is the message I received, and I thought I would share with you. She
wrote the book, Portuguese Bermudians. She has just finished
more records that should be available through the Bermuda registry as she
just got back from there. So for you in Bermuda, you might
want to check out her latest stuff.

Tish

 Hi Tish,

My goodness, this was a surprisejust to know that people are interested
is so wonderful

I immediately looked up the information that I had here, and yes, I found
four of the names:

FURTADI, FEMALE - NOVEMBER 18,1906, SANDY'S PARISH, PARENTS AUGUST FURTADI &
ANGELINA FURTADI BORN MASSASZ, BBR#323,851

FURTOS, MARY D'ESTRALEA, NOVEMBER 15, 1907, ST. EDWARD'S CHURCH, PEMBROKE
PARISH, PARENTS AUGUSTUS FURTOS & ANGELINA MESRCIES, #SERCC

FATADO, MALE, DECEMBER 19, 1907, SOUTHAMPTON, PARENTS AUGUST FATADO &
ANGELINA FATADO BORN MADEIROS, BBR#24,658

FATADO, MARY DESTAR, JULY 11, 1909, SOUTHAMPTON, PARENTS AUGUST FATADO &
ANGELINA FATADO BORN MADEIRA, BBR#25,737

Please note that the Church entry does not match the Registry entry...Also,
prior to 1866, Christian names were not required to be registered

As you can see, the language was quite a hardship...the spelling kept
changingI did not find them with the Pimental spelling...the first
Pimental birth was in 1905...Manuel Pimento and Josephine Pimento born
Marshall...

Hope you both are wellthanks for sending me this nice e-mail.Love,
Pat

Hello Helen,

Thank you very much for your offer. It's much appreciated. This line is one
that I haven't had much success with. I emailed a potential relative on
Ancestry.com back in Oct. 2009 and just received a reply that she is a
relative. Also, found out that Margaret would go by her nickname "Minnie",
which is why I had troubles finding any information on her. Once I added
Minnie to my data base and her 1st husbands name of Dutra I was then able to
find the children though under the birth index of Dutro but at least it was
there.

Thank you again,

  Hi Robin,

I volunteer at the Santa Clara County Archives. We just indexed the Coroners
Inquests for that time period and put it online. Your Lawrence and Lucille
appear on the index. They died on 14 June 1914. They lived on Mary St in
Sunnyvale. Here is the link:

http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/rec/agencyarticle?path=%2Fv7%2FCounty%20Clerk-Recorder%20%28DEP%29/County%20Archives%2FCounty%20Coroner%20Inquests%20Collection&contentId=db7dea9f99496210VgnVCM1048dc4a92

If you call the Archives at 408 792-1895, they will make a copy of the actual
inquest record that gives the full details. There is a cost but I don't know
what it is. There are two separate records, one for Lawrence and one for
Lucille.

If the cost is too much, let me know and I will take a photo of the two.

To Robin & Pam,

Robin,

I live in Sunnyvale.  Yesterday afternoon I called the Sunnyvale Library and
spoke with the research librarian to see how far back they kept copies of the
Sunnyvale Standard (newspaper) and was told they have original copies going
back
to 1913.

I was going to wait a few days to see if you came up with a date of death for
Lawrence and Lucile before emailing you.  THANKS to Pam you now have the
6-4-1914 date.

Within the coming week I will go to the library and see if I can obtain
additional information for you.  I will email you with what I discover and ways
for you to obtain the information if there is an article in the Sunnyvale
Standard about the deaths.

Pam,

Excellent link that you provided.  Thanks muchly.

Hi Robin,

I volunteer at the Santa Clara County Archives.  We just indexed the Coroners
Inquests for that time period and put it online.  Your Lawrence and Lucille
appear on the index.  They died on 14 June 1914.  They lived on Mary St in
Sunnyvale.  Here is the link:

http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/rec/agencyarticle?path=%2Fv7%2FCounty%20Clerk-Recorder%20%28DEP%29/County%20Archives%2FCounty%20Coroner%20Inquests%20Collection&contentId=db7dea9f99496210VgnVCM1048dc4a92

If you call the Archives at 408 792-1895, they will make a copy of the actual
inquest record that gives the full details.  There is a cost but I don't know
what it is.  There are two separate records, one for Lawrence and one for
Lucille.

If the cost is too much, let me know and I will take a photo of the two.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Margaret Borba - Santa Clara County, CA

2010-09-30 Thread Besotes
Hello Elaine and Eric,

I've found a little resource and would like to pass it along. Haven't found
any information yet on my quest for Margaret Borba Dutra Reynolds nor her
children.

Elaine I took your advice and phoned the Santa Clara County Library. They have
the San Jose Mercury News back to the 1980's to present. They suggested I
phone the San Jose library where they were very helpful. The do have the
records on microfilm back to the late 1800's. They offer inter library loan
which I may have sent to my local library or possibly see if the Sacramento
State Library might have them on film.

http://www.sjlibrary.org/research/special/ca/

Here's an online digital collection database from the California Room of the
San Jose library. They have old online collections at

http://digitalcollections.sjlibrary.org/cdm4/aboutcollection.php?CISOROOT=/arbuckle
where you'll find this link via the link above. Take a look at the right
hand side of the page where it says FEATURED COLLECTIONS. Under this section
you'll see San Jose City Directories. Very nice scanned copies of old 1800's
and early 1900 directories.

One of the directories indicated there were newspapers at the time period I'm
seeking called:

San Jose Post, Mercury Herald, Evening News, The Union, Santa Clara Journal and
the Santa Clara News. My last trip to the State library in Sacramento reminded
me of the importance of know all the newspapers for a particular area you're
researching. When I did this on another project it really helped to know what
films to pull and search. Hope this helps another.

2010-09-30 Thread Tracy Krause
I found this in my old mail and was wondering (besides Jacki) how more ppl
in this group will be attending this? If I can pull it off with such
lateness...I hope to go. Have some fau family members that live near by the
fairgrounds ~ just have to check into the cost to fly there! If anything it
puts me close to the ARCHIVES in the area where my grandmother lived!!
(Ermelinda my mystery women) She truly exsisted in that area, lived in many
of the towns ~ but for the life of me can not find her on any type of
census, directory or anything else!!

To those that are attended best of luck with your search

Pam,

Great site! Listers, if any of your ancestors naturalized in Santa Clara
County, click on their naturalization index - I put in the name Silva and
50 names came up. Great resource to add to your Favorites! Keep up the good
work!
