[cayugabirds-l] Yellow rumped warbler

We took an evening stroll at Sapsucker Woods this evening.
Aside from the deafening but delighfful spring peepers which were our
reason to go, highlights were 2 phoebes, one yellow-rumped warbler, one
very busy beaver and two huge turtles trolling in the shallowy mud.  It is
beautiful there.

[cayugabirds-l] woodcocks displaying - airport

A few weeks ago we heard at least 3 American Woodcocks peenting and
displaying in the brushy field on Mohawk Road (behind the airport). One of
them was close enough to not only see in the air, but also on the ground,
completing the entire display cycle in full view.

To get there, we take Snyder Road, turn right on Mohawk, and pull in at the
"service road. .

Last night I returned to the location and at at least 3 are still there
putting on a show.

[cayugabirds-l] barn swallows

Seems our BARN SWALLOWS finally arrived last night, about a week or more
later than usual. There are at least 3 of them in the barn and few flitting
about, a great welcome to a sunny spring day!

[cayugabirds-l] OOB? Rough-legged

Yesterday and last Saturday I found two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS on Townsendville
Road, south of Covert Road and north of Vesa in Interlaken. They were a joy
to watch and remained in the same area for long minutes of good viewing.
Can anyone tell me if this is OOB?

Also yesterday I saw both a male and female NORTHERN HARRIER hunting on
Center Road, just east of the CR129 intersection in Ovid.

[cayugabirds-l] SEOW Ovid

Yesterday around 9:30 a.m. I was cruising around Ovid and Interlaken
looking for snowies. I did not find any, but I did see a SEOW, on Center
Road just east of CR129, quietly perched atop a stalk in the corn field. It
was a gorgeous sunny day and I was surprised to see it.

Nothing else of significance unless you count the dozen MOURNING DOVES that
have decided my front porch is the best place for roosting and dropping
presents. When they take to the shrubs, however, and the light hits them
just right, they appear to be glowing peaches. Sometimes I forget to notice
how beautiful the common birds are.

On Saturday afternoon, I finally got to take a drive along Wyers Road and
Sheldrake Park in Ovid and test my waterfowl id skills I learned from the
Lab of O on-line class (thanks, Kevin!).

Along the way (near the b&b) I saw 5 REDHEADS, about a dozen BUFFLEHEADS, 2
TUNDRA SWANS, 25 GOLDENEYES, 22 RINGNECKED DUCKS, and about 8 COMMON
MERGANSERS.  I am certain there were other birds I did not count or see
very well.

The COMMON MERGANSERS were quite actively engaged in courtship display, and
it was fun to watch! They would circle about, stretch their necks upward
pointing their bills to the sky, dip down into the water and then cozy up
to a female while chasing away the competition. There was also much
flapping and splashing about. I couldn't hear if they were vocalizing,
however, from my perch above the cove.

[cayugabirds-l] SNOWY OWL carcass

Sorry, I hit enter before I was done writing.

Yesterday morning, I decided to take a detour from my regular route to
work, and I turned down Halseyville Road hoping to spot the Enfield SNOWY
OWL that was recently reported.  Just as I approached Iradell Road, I found
a snowy owl lying in the middle of the road, an apparent victim of a
collision.

Without examining it too closely, I placed the lifeless owl in my back seat
and headed for the Lab of O, where a staff member guided me in. There
little visible injury to the bird, and we got close looks at its huge feet
and beautiful plumage.

I send my gratitude to the staff at the lab who were so kind with me, for
their reverence with the bird, and to the owl itself for its long journey
south and stunning beauty. I hope the owl will have a permanent place at
the lab, and provide good science education for years to come.

[cayugabirds-l] 2 screech owls - new yard bird!

Around 4 a.m. this morning, I was awoken by the whinny call of at least two
SCREECH OWLS.  Still sleepy, my brain took a while to process what I was
hearing and I thought it was my neighbor's pony next door.  But the whinny
calls ended with really cool screech owl trill, confirming that it was
indeed the SCREECH OWLS.  They were calling back and forth, and quite
close. This is a new yard bird for us, so I hope they stick around!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Possible other RHW Nest

I was there at May's Point yesterday afternoon, and watched one red-headed
woodpecker going in and out of another hole further north in the same grove
of dead trees. He would put his head in and pull it out, shaking the wood
dust off. Then he would go all the way in, disappear for a few seconds,
then stick his head out.  I don't recall anyone reporting this possible
second nest at May's Point.

[cayugabirds-l] robin with worm behavior

I noticed an interesting behavior with a robin in our gravel driveway. It
had a large worm in its beak, and would drag it along, then start spining
around in a circle dragging it all the while, then stop and re-grab it then
walk straight for a few steps. It repreated the dragging and spinning and
walking until it was in the tall grass and I lost sight of it. Has anyone
else seen anything similar?

Where there are usually two ravens in the neighborhood, this morning at
6:30 a.m. there were 7 flying overhead, with at least two vocalizing. I
wonder if this could be both parents and new fledglings already?

There was one RUBY CROWNED KINGLET in the hemlocks at the azalea garden
behind ADWhite House at around 1:15. He came in very close, and provided
very good views of his red crest when I played audio (just once :-)) from
iBird.

[cayugabirds-l] house sparrow question

I work at Cornell, and I currently have a pair of house sparrows *trying*
to build a nest on the window sill, under the air conditioner. I say trying
because for the past two weeks they work tirelessly at it, but by the
afternoon their whole project is gone. I don't think it is the wind, but
rather one of them getting all flustered and knocking the thing down. Could
this be simply an inexperienced young pair who have chosen a poor spot? Or
is this not unusual for house sparrows?

It is beginning to be quite comical for me and my office mate, particularly
this morning when the male arrived with a seedy/leafy stick bigger than
himself.

Any insight is appreciated!

[cayugabirds-l] wool for nesting birds

I have an alpaca farm next door, and they gave me a wire suet feeder
stuffed with alpaca wool. After seeing tufts of insulation in our yard this
week (probably those nasty, opportunistic starlings have found yet another
way into our attic), I figure it is not too soon to hang this in a tree and
see if the birds--any birds--like it. It appears to have been heavily
picked at already. If anyone is interested in knowing if the birds find
this appealing or not, I'm happy to keep you posted!

[cayugabirds-l] Orchard Oriole nest

After checking a few sources (Thanks, Jay and others!)  and an intense hour of 
waiting and watching, I am excited to confirm a nesting ORCHARD ORIOLE in my 
front yard.

Noticing the female working and weaving a nest in a fork at the top of a small 
maple tree, the ID was confirmed when I saw both the female and the male 
together. She's slightly bigger than the male, and greener than a female 
baltimore. He's very dark ruby and black and not easy to spot.  Getting clear 
views was challenging but my patience paid off-- Just like the Baltimore 
orioles, they are very good at hiding in plain sight, seeming to know exactly 
which leaves will keep them hidden from view.

[cayugabirds-l] cowbird parasitization question

A few days ago I noticed a male brown-headed cowbird sitting on the wire fairly 
close to an active house-finch nest. The finches were not making a fuss in his 
presence.  The next day, 2 eggs were smashed on the porch. The finches are 
still hanging around the nest, however, and being busy and fussy.   I've not 
had a chance to see if the female is actually sitting on the nest or not. The 
nest seems to be loose and to have been disturbed.

I am finding conflicting and confusing information about cowbird parasitization 
– would the female cowbird actually push the finches eggs from the nest? Does 
the male have any involvement in choosing the nest?

[cayugabirds-l] FOY killdeer and others..

We had our FOY KILLDEER  yesterday, and early this morning we heard a lone 
HORNED LARK singing. The bluebirds were chiming in as well. They seem to have 
chosen their nest box across the road while the house sparrows are guarding the 
box in the corner of our yard.

Around 5:00 p.m. last night I good very good looks at a male KESTREL at the top 
of the telephone pole (above the sparrow nest box) eating a small rodent. As he 
ate and repositioned himself, he turned in a complete circle, providing 
excellent views. That is one striking bird.

For the past two nights, huge flocks of snow geese have been gathering in 
fields on Tunison and Bassett  at 96A in Ovid, and also on Hall Road at Munson. 
I don't recall seeing this many still around at this time of year.

Same thing happening between Cayuga & Seneca Lakes: at 5:00 PM today, tens of 
thousands of Snow Geese coming out of the north and flying SSE over Rock River 
& Wycoff Roads in Ovid, in steady streams with hardly a break between flocks.  
I could only stay about 10 minutes, so have no idea how long the river of 
flocks continued.   They were flying pretty much parallel to Cayuga Lake, hard 
to say just where they were headed.

Went to NY Chiro College this AM looking for the Snowy Owl. Not found. Talked 
to Building and Grounds crew who said the owl was there all of last week but 
has not been seen this week. Spent its time on the far Westside of the campus 
most often seen on bleachers behind the maintenance building. Will check on it 
and post.

[cayugabirds-l] Ovid snowy-no; short-eared-yes

Last evening around 4:30 we looked for the Ovid snowy owl once again, with no 
luck.

We did see 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS on Wycoff/Rock River flying over the fields, with 
fairly close viewing.
Just before it was too dark to see anything, a male NORTHERN HARRIER appeared 
from the west, flying towards the east field and disappearing into the woods. 
In my opinion, that is one of the most beautiful birds.

[cayugabirds-l] shrike, snow geese, heron

Despite the rain yesterday, I travelled to Van Dyne Spoor Rd to see the 
NORTHERN SHRIKE. It was there at the east end and easily spotted as a grey blob 
at the top of a shrub—I love when that happens. I watched in the rain for about 
1/2 hour, and this bird kept moving from shrub to tree and back to shrub 
without me ever seeing it fly. I swear it knew when I needed to blink. While 
there I got a very close look at 4 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS feeding on a shrub. 
Though I often think of sparrows as being sort-of drab and common, their color 
was brilliant against the gray rainy sky. A great pick-me-up.

Other general sitings:
2 BALD EAGLES at Montezuma – one near the nest on Armitage; one at Tschache pool
1 NORTHERN HARRIER at Tschache
NO SNOWY OWL (but then, I don't have a scope)
lots of TUNDRA SWANS at the mudflats and along the lake road at the north end 
of Cayuga.
Thousands of SNOW GEESE in the fields along the back roads in Romulus.
1 GREAT BLUE HERON flying low across the road in Romulus

I've got bluebirds roosting at night in the east & north eaves of our big old 
house – cool!

[cayugabirds-l] Beebe lake this morning

Hi everyone,

For the last couple of mornings, from the footbridge over Beebe Lake, I've seen 
an all black duck dabbling in the pool of the first waterfall. When it turns 
its head, the head/neck is sort of green like a mallard, and his bill is 
light-colored. Is this one of those hybrids? Has anyone else seen it? Also, a 
BLACK-BACKED GULL is back on the water.

I just went over during lunch - and all 4 birds were there in a bare space
within the hydrangea on the corner, almost at the top. I went into the
ladies room on the first floor and was rewarded with a view at eye-level.
Both parents (one reddish, one gray), and two fledglings (one reddish, one

[cayugabirds-l] Sunday birds at FLSM

late posting:

During my lunch break Sunday at the Finger Lakes School of Massage (FLSM) on 
Rt96:

Wood thrush – heard 3, saw one (my first)
Yellow Warblers – heard at least 5
common yellow-throat – heard 2
gray catbirds – heard at least 3 (at one point they were all just mewing in 
stereo)
eastern phoebe – 1
goldfinches – 3 males (very yellow)
chickadees – too many to count

Only the chickadees, Phoebe and the Goldfinchers were there on Saturday.

[cayugabirds-l] American Woodcock, Ovid

To my surprise, I’ve discovered that we have at least 3 WOODCOCKS across the 
road from our house. What surprises me (and this may show my lack of knowledge 
on the subject) is that this area is active farm acreage. Nearest the road is a 
section of first-year alfalfa, then last year’s corn, then a section of 
overgrown meadow, then last year’s corn again, then shrubs, woods and a stream. 
Standing in the corn section, we hear their whole routine at dusk and again at 
dawn. Now I don’t have to get into the car and drive somewhere to enjoy this 
spring bird!

Despite the snow, SONG SPARROWS were calling back and forth non-stop this 
morning at 6:30 am telling me that spring is actually here.

[cayugabirds-l] snow geese and bluebirds

Drowning out the sounds of the snow shovel this morning was the barking/honking 
of hundreds of SNOW GEESE passing low overhead, with a few soft BLUEBIRD songs 
to fill in the spaces.

Note on the bluebirds:  We had 7 of them all winter. They roost in the eaves of 
our house, tucked in out of the weather, in a space that is visible from my 
north-east bedroom window.

I've seen one SEO at CR 129/Center Road in Ovid. But I've also been seeing
three SEOs in on Wycoff Road just east of Rock River Road, looking north
into the farm property (The Beardsley farm). They fly back and forth across
Wycoff. They were here last year, but were more visible from Rock River.

[cayugabirds-l] New yard bird: Indigo Bunting

For the past week, we have been happy to have an INDIGO BUNTING singing from 
several perches around the yard. Even though we are in the middle of farm 
country, this is the first time we’ve had an Indigo bunting in the yard or the 
surrounding acreage. He’s lovely. Notable changes to the habitat this year were 
oats instead of alfalfa on the west side, and alfalfa instead of corn on the 
east side.

Also new this week:  Eastern Kingbirds. Several of our shrubs are starting to 
show berries and seeds, and the kingbirds like to hang out in them. I wonder if 
it is a particular insect that is available right now that they like?

[cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owls/harrier

We watched 3 short-eared owls and one norther harrier on Rock River 
Road last night around 5:30. One owl gave a sat for a long pose on a 
fence post - the light was perfect to see the color differences of 
the neck and face while he turned his head about, even with no 
binoculars!

Barn swallows

Our barn swallows ususally leave around between August 18 and August 
23, but here it is Sept. 2 and they are still here.


A great horned owl just starting hooting a few nights ago, and we 
also have a Cooper's Hawk hanging around for the last week or so.
