Gavin,
Apologies for not replying sooner.
We don't have our ILLiad request function set up as a GES that can be
edited via the GES configuration menu. It may take me a bit to unravel how
we set it up. If you'd like we can talk on the phone about what we have
set up.

[CODE4LIB] Seeking examples of outstanding discovery layers

2012-09-19 Thread Tania Fersenheim
Got a favorite discovery interface? Send me the URL

I am doing some quick & dirty investigation into libraries that have
successfully and elegantly integrated discovery of various resources,
e.g.:

 - library catalog
 - federated indexing service such as Serials Solutions or Primo
Central, or a federated search system like Metalib
 - ejournals
 - ebooks
 - libguides
 - library web site
 - worldcat local
 - that kind o' stuff

I am looking for sites that are both nice to look at and seem easy to
use. I will assume that if you're touting your own site it is
technologically sophisticated. :-D Got any faves?

Do any of you work at an institution where the job title for a

different title if they do not hold an MLS, but the job duties are the

I know I have seen this from time to time in job postings, and am

Re: [CODE4LIB] Cataloging4Coders @ C4L12 - We need your brains

2011-11-18 Thread Tania Fersenheim
It could be very helpful to have a short history of MARC. AIUI,
MARC's purpose was to make automate the printing of catalog cards.
Searching, OPACs, etc, were bolted on later. Maybe having an
understanding of why MARC looks like it does will help coders feel
less frustrated with some of its weird quirks - like Uniform Title.

I've found programmers to be fascinated by MARC once they begin to
understand why it is structured the way it is and (most importantly)
understand why it's not going to metamorphose either quickly or soon
into a form they might see as more logical or useful. :-)

Re: [CODE4LIB] Code4Lib 2011 Proposals

2010-03-03 Thread Tania Fersenheim
The Statler is a nice facility and could probably accomodate the number of
attendees, but I suspect that even with a negotiated conference rate it
will be fairly expensive. And, while campus is beautiful, it's a bit out
of the thick of things night-life wise, unless we're all willing to
channel our inner college student and hit the Palms and Chapter House. ;-)

I would prefer the Hilton Garden Inn downtown. As you point out, the
downtown location is ideal for restaurants, pubs, etc, and absolutely
perfect for hopping on public transportation. It's fairly new, they do
conferences/meetings regularly, though I don't know what size groups they
usually work with.

The Holiday Inn is, IMO, completely out of the question. They try hard
but never seem to hit the mark when it comes to facilities and services.

HTH!

Born & raised in Ithaca, went to college there (Go Big Red!) and I love it
there. BUT I have to agree that February in Ithaca can be dreary. They
have a decent restaurant and pub scene but one of the key attractions for
Ithaca is the outdoor activities.

Though we could do a wine tour!

And visit Wegmans. And eat good bagels. And half moon cookies. And drink
Ithaca beers.

I've changed my mind - I'm all over Ithaca for C4L11.

I have some very strong opinions on venue though. :-)
