For nmap to work, there hane to be some network services on other side.
I don't think some *random PC* will have one.
May be some device info as shown in syslog/dmesg on Frerunner will help?
I don't own Frerunner, so can't check it myself.

MAME?

Has anyone ported/started working on a port of MAME for the
freerunner? A quick search didn't turn up anything. I know there's a
port for the iPaq, so I don't think a freerunner version should be
too tough. I just don't want to duplicate anyones efforts.

Running the illume theme: Not sure about the cpu - but removing
drop-shadow does stop the segfaults when running software_16 engine.
Also the Settings app now runs, and for a short while at least I had a
gsm signal level (maybe too low where I am at the moment).

> 3G chip would cost so much?

because the only chips available in low volume (like 5k, 10k, 20k) cost a LOT.
if you want high volume you cant buy a low-cost module, you need to develop it
yourself from the original schematics - and then pay a license fee. there is an
initial cost just to "get started" before you develop a single unit - this is
in the millions range. (depending who you go to). then you pay PER chip in the
range of $10-$50 LICENSE fees - you STILL have to manufacture the module
yourself too. so not including your own manufacturing setup costs.

now let's talk the volumes of freerunner. it's in the 10k's range (10, 20, 30
at most). lets assume 20k over 12 months (low but need to be conservative).
let's assume the LOW end of $1mil license. lets assume we have $20/unit
license. lets assume a further $500k module production setup fee. lets assume a
further $10/module production cost (production, testing, qa, all oveheads).

1m / 20k = $50 / unit
500k / 20k = $25 / unit production setup costs
   + $20 / unit license fee
   + $10 / unit production costs
  --
 $105 / 3g modem

thats for 20,000 units. nokia and apple get to play the "mass production" game.
its not 20k - its 2million units or 5million or 10million or more. so the
equation is more like:
1m / 10m = $0.1 / unit
500k / 10m = $0.05 /unit
   + $20
   + $10
  --
 $30.15 / unit.

less than 1/3 the cost. as best i know anyone selling pre-made "3g modules" so
you dont have to set up your own production is charging in the range of
$100-$300 per module (depending who you go to and the volume you buy). this is
where someone developed the module (did what nokia/apple etc. do) and now
re-sell their work. 1-offs i have seen for sale for $250 or so for a 3g module.
buy in bulk and you get a discount of course (thus the $100-$300 range). and the
fewer suppliers in between the better.

of course i am talking ballpark figures - these are not exact nor do not
indicate any particular chip or manufacturer. but they are about ballpark
"right". when you are apple and come and want to make 12m iphones - you get a
DAMN good price as you invest the money in doing your own 3g module run (based
on others original designs).

also there are license fees you pay per PRODUCT that uses 3g (a % of the total
cost of the product) - but i am not up on the details of these.

again - these are BALLPARK figures and intended to demonstrate how when you do
low-volume things like the freerunner you are in deep trouble trying to compete
- it's EXTREMELY HARD. i make no representation as to if this matches any chip
or is an amalgam of several and is even 100% accurate - or close. but it is
intended as an illustration of the kinds of costs you have to deal with. you
really need to give openmoko a break - or find a lot more open phone customers
willing to buy millions of open linux phones.

now remember - this is adding to the baseline COST. for every $ spent in cost,
om needs to try make a profit. to cover development costs, support, etc. etc. -
this is the only way you will also see it at a discount later. ie they lower
their profit when the device becomes "obsolete" and to do so u need a profit
margin to start with. so maybe you will take your component/base hw cost and
double it - that's retail. so... add a $100 part - see phone cost go up by $200.

of course if you are in the cut-throat retail channel business where you are
selling millions of devices each year and trying to compete with the $0 "free
phone with your plan" competitor - you shave profit margins a lot, but on
small-volume devices like the freerunner you need high margins to support a
company. as volumes go up - margins can come down - like pretty much everything
as the many of the same overhead costs apply to selling 20k freerunner as do
selling 10m freerunners, so not per unit.

I definitely believe that it shouldn't be doing that and it was not
always the case. I am certainly willing to accept there is something
screwy with my upgrade path, but I did not do anything intentionally
to the theme or defendant components. (The only thing that comes to
mind that *might* be related is that I renice qpe to -5).

Even if the 20% CPU utilization went away, removing drop shadows so
the Software-16 engine can work seems worthwhile to me.

yup. see gadman module :) already works. problem is gadman "relies" on a 2
button mouse (ir right mouse for control) - that needs fixing/changing so it
can would with 1 mouse button. :) but in principle it works. it does conflict
with illumes launcher - but.. i intend to split that off into a gadget and use
gadman anyway :) (and improve gadmans' layout so things scale properly or
position irrespective of resolution/aspec/screen setup). it's not perfect atm.

that's why i'm not going into making the launcher better - it needs splitting
out and other stuff first structurally :)

2008.12 and USB network Ubuntu Intrepid

2008-12-21 Thread Pander
Hi all,

On FR I've installed 2008.12 and on my laptop Ubuntu Interpid with wicd.

I've tried several combinations of
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/USB_Networking#Debian.2C_Ubuntu_and_others
and ifconfig once told me it has a usb0 when I still had network-manager
but so far I've not been able to ping or ssh the FR.

Now with wicd, I have added this
# freerunner
allow-hotplug usb0
iface usb0 inet static
address 192.168.0.200
netmask 255.255.255.0
up iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j MASQUERADE
up echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
down iptables -D POSTROUTING -t nat -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j MASQUERADE

added the udev rule and script and patched this
/etc/udev/rules.d/85-ifupdown.rules

Should this be enough?

Update, I had it running after manually running "freerunner start" but
now it is dead again :(

What is the exact (and minimal) configuration for my setup with wicd to
get this working?

Thanks,

Pander

No, you're doing everything right. It's just that I haven't any time to run
it on different Python major versions. It should be easy enough to adapt
code to Python 3k. Quite likely it all adaptation will likely to consist of
replacing "print ..." statements with "print(...)". And it's likely that
there one or two places where print is used at all.

That's what I've done but using neotool for flashing.
The order was different (rootfs first), is it important ?
Can somebody explain what "lowlevel" is ?

I will retry to flash all manually.

[OM 2008.12] Enlightenment Drop Shadow Performance

2008-12-21 Thread Dylan Reilly
FWIW, I have been able to reduce the CPU usage of Enlightenment on my
OM testing build device by disabling drop shadows. After recent
updates from testing (which should be more or less the 2008.12 image)
Enlightenment was constantly grabbing 20% CPU and who knows how much
IO. After I obliterated the drop shadow module,
(/usr/lib/enlightenment/modules/dropshadow) only 1-2% CPU is being
used.

Moreover, I remembered some recent post(s) tentatively linking the
Software-16 crashes (when using the illume theme) to drop shadows. On
a whim I re-enabled that engine and am not seeing any problems. So,
now I get a snappier UI to boot.

2) Should one flash the Kolou beta image or Sean's image?

Stylus/finger based innovative input

2008-12-21 Thread Yogiz
Here's something that I found in my RSS feed:
http://procrastineering.blogspot.com/2008/12/nice-pen-based-input-research.html

I found all three projects interesting and thought whether they would
connect to the freerunner as well.

While the first one would not come in too handy as freerunner
touchscreen does not sense strength of pressure, the other two could
provide some interesting solutions, particularly the second one.

Display bridging drags could be used for quickly connecting freerunners
with other freerunners or tablet laptops and share files and give
presentations rather painlessly.

The rolling interface could other provide ideas for hardware
modifications (attaching sensors to stylus for roll input connected to
freerunner via blueooth for example) or why not do it the other way,
keeping finger/stylus in place while moving freerunner underneath
(accelerometers).

What do you think?

Re: Importing Contacts from Thunderbird

2008-12-21 Thread Will Siddall
> Can you tell me what you found out about the format? It also does not
> import contacts from jpilot.

What I noticed is that in most contact lines, the format would be:

TEL;TYPE=CELL,VOICE:5551234567

the sed line pretty much changes the line to:

TEL;CELL;VOICE:5551234567

Now, I'm no expert on the VCard format, but this a big difference
between the formats that did work and what I had that didn't. So, I
applied this line to a VCard that had about 100 contacts and
everything went in afterwards (after taking out multiple line notes)

[Hackable-0.1 - rev 2] - dist-upgrade not working

2008-12-21 Thread Linus Gasser
Hello Hackables,

As I didn't find the tracker for the Hackable distribution, I try here.
I installed hackable which seems to be most of what I need and want. I
already broke it ;) When doing "apt-get dist-upgrade", I got two errors:

- matchbox-something wanted to overwrite a file already present on the
system - nothing a dpkg --force-all couldn't fix. But still...

- linux-kernel was complaining about not being able to make a link to
/boot/uImage - understandable, as it's a VFAT partition hanging around
there.

- after the dist-upgrade, the GSM icon doesn't show up anymore (I did
install notifier-daemon) - anyobdy else?

I'm happy having taken the Openmoko up, again...

thanks, now it works. I must've fotgotten the kernel or so. Well, the

I had the same problem on first boot, and it was simply resolved by
booting again. On subsequent boots ssh has worked every time.

Re: Bluetooth headset GUI configuration

2008-12-21 Thread Carl Lobo
Basically simply followed the steps on the Bluez Wiki for bonding. The
rest of Angus' scripts seem to work. You don't even need the device in
discoverable mode etc if you know it's bluetooth address
simply
passkey-agent --default (in one console - sometimes it stops on
tty output if i do an &)
dbus-send --system --type=method_call --print-reply --dest=org.bluez
/org/bluez/hci0 org.bluez.Adapter.CreateBonding string:
then in ~/.asoundrc

pcm.headset_raw {
type bluetooth
device
profile "voice"
}

ctl.headset {
type bluetooth;
device
}

pcm.headset {
type plug
slave.pcm = headset_raw
}

BtHeadset.py should work after that.

Now here's the strange thing - if I try

mplayer -ao alsa:device=headset it connects and shows me that its
playing - there are several card resets and hcid seg-faults every once
in a while, but I see SDP packets using hcidump. I tried all the Btcpu
state files as well as fiddling around with alsamixer (from whatever
little I could guess wildly at from the wolfson diagrams on wiki, past
emails etc) but no sound. There may be data coming in in a codec my
headset doesn't understand because if I press the volume key the
acknowledgement sound comes really distorted. Maybe my ScoRouting=HCI
then, I tried this quite some time back, I could have tried with
both...
however when I try a call -> the Angus' BtHeadset script shows me now
playing, same with hcid -n -d. However no sdp packets before or after
I restore the state. Also ScoRouting=PCM (otherwise it refuses the
headset play). And absolutely no sound on the call on either end (the
mic or speakers of the freerunner, headset or cordless phone). I can
hear both ends properly from the expected devices before I restore the
state file.
I tried building bluez 4.22 a couple of weeks back. It better
identifies the features of my headset (the full handsfree profile) but
doesn't look like it's implemented... (there's no telephony-*.c for
openmoko in the bluez source either). But no sound here as well and on
occasion a blinking red AUX led and a kernel crash :).
The headset does work with my laptop though - using bluez 3.30 I
think. I could hcidump on both devices if anyone can understand it and
help... At least the output of hcid -n -d seems very similar for both
the laptop (on FC9) and the FR (on the newest SHR).
The bluetooth headset is something I badly miss, I can't take any
calls while driving. But at least I can take calls pretty reliably now
though :)

Hi Linus,

I ran into a similar problem.
The solution that worked for me was:

 dfu-util -a kernel -R -D Om2008.12-om-gta02.uImage.bin
 dfu-util -a rootfs -R -D Om2008.12-om-gta02.rootfs.jffs2
 dfu-util -a u-boot -R -D gta02v5_and_up-u-boot.bin

Some of that might not be needed, but i did it anyway.
After it booted i had no working usb.
so i powered it down, removed the battery and usb cord, waited a few
secs and powered it back on again.
Now it did work as expected.
notice that the first boot took almost 2 minutes, while the second boot
took a little under a a minute.
i hope this helps.

Kind regards,
Ed

If I understand the sed command it is changing some of the syntax from vCard

Hi,

I have the same problem - did they put in a non-compatible kernel
version with regards to module? Does anybody have a working Om 2008.12
version?

I checked the md5sums and they seem to be OK.

- Is it necessary to flash more than the JFFS and the uImage?
- Do I need to flash the u-boot, too?
- And what is the "lowlevel" for?
- Does anyone have a working Om 2008.12 with USB and/or Wifi?

Looking forward,

Weather app: meooem 0.0.1

2008-12-21 Thread Yann Neveu
Here:
http://gabuzomeu.fr/openmoko/meooem/ and on
http://www.opkg.org/package_66.html , you'll find a small app which fetch yahoo
rss weather feed and add an icon on your illume launcher.
You can press on it to update datas. If not connected, no feed, and the temp
will be -1.

Code is bloated and ugly and the next step is to clean up before adding other
functions like displaying next days forecast and things like that. Other
change will be the icon set which could be more free than the stardock ones
(see the /usr/share/pixmaps/meoeem/stardock/permission.txt).

Please modify /etc/meooem.conf to have you preffered city weather instead of
mine.

Any suggestions welcomed.
