Bug#368688: yafc tmpfiles

2006-05-23 Thread neologix
package: yafc

Hello.

Attached is a patch dealing with yafc temporary files.
It is currently using make_unique_filename() to generate pseudo-unique
filenames, and use them as temporary files.
There are two problems:
-hard coding the directories isn't a good idea
-there is the same security risks as with mktemp()

The attached patch replaces these with tmpfile().

No, sorry, it's created in the process' working directory.

This means that no cores are created. If you want to change this, just
enter 'ulimit -c 20' (or another large number) before you start
the process which would crash.

Most signals dump core, so you might try to raise the core limit and
try again.

Indeed there are no binaries, however the arch: all packages are there
already and got upgraded. Didn't notice that.

I was reporting the bug so it wouldn't go unnnoticed and others would
have had a chance to add some more data before I got the time to do it
myself (tomorrow being a bank holiday).

Bug#368687: am-utils: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation

2006-05-23 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: am-utils
Version: N/A
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch l10n

Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the
debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors.

If you do not already use it, please remember about the
"podebconf-report-po" utility, which helps warning translators about
changes when you modify some debconf templates in your packages. See
its man page for details.

The usual policy when using it is sending a warning to translators when
you plan to upload a version of your package with debconf templates
changes (EVEN TYPO CORRECTIONS). Then leave about one week for them to
update their files (several translation teams have a QA process which
requires time).

podebconf-report-po will take care of sending the translators the
needed material as well as getting the translators adresses from the
PO files. All you have to do is just using the utility..:-)

If you apply this policy, please forget about these remarks, of
courseThis message is generic..:-)

The only problem I see with this page is that the server says it's UTF-8
while it's ISO-8859-1. If you manually chose ISO-8859-1 encoding it
displays just fine. There's nothing we can do there, if the server
states wrong things.

Bug#368686: ddclient daemon mode fails if update host cannot be resolved at startup

2006-05-23 Thread Stephen P Williams
Package: ddclient
Version: 3.6.7-2
Severity: normal

Due to a botched line in my /etc/udev/rules.d/010_local.rules file that caused
my ethernet interface not to get renamed as expected, I ran into a small bug in
ddclient. Apparently, ddclient looks up the IP address of the update host only
at package startup time, and as a result of my earlier problem, this failed,
leading to the following entries in /var/log/daemon.

May 23 20:04:35 wallace ddclient[4403]: WARNING: cannot connect to
checkip.dyndns.org:80 socket: IO::Socket::INET: Bad hostname

checkip.dyndns.org:80 socket: IO::Socket::INET: Bad hostname
'checkip.dyndns.org'

When I discovered and fixed the problem with my udev rule and got my
'forcedeth' interface working correctly, I continued to get the warnings from
ddclient:

May 23 20:18:53 wallace avahi-daemon[4348]: New relevant interface
forcedeth.IPv4 for mDNS.
May 23 20:18:53 wallace avahi-daemon[4348]: Joining mDNS multicast group

The above warnings were issued even though 'host checkip.dyndns.org' returned
valid IP address lookup. Issuing "/etc/init.d/ddclient restart" cleared the
problem up immediately:

Justin,

In a moment, I'll forward my revised version of the page.

In fact, I took on most of the material that you suggested,
but revised some of it significantly. But please,
for the future, if you want to get do things as follows when writing a major
patch:

a) Notify me in advance: I maight have some comments about
how planned changes should be done.

b) Break logically separate parts up, and submit them separately.
Big patches covering multiple logical areas are too much work
   to understand.

I'll just make a few specific comments on the patch below.

While I appreciate that the type ftw_func_t is defined in
the header, and its use makes the declarations look simpler,
it is non-standard, so I'm reluctant to use it in the man page.

In truth, it is not "breadth first" but "pre-order".
(The name FTW_DEPTH is a misnomer -- really it means "post-order".)

.SH DESCRIPTION
\fBftw\fP() walks through the directory tree that is
located under the directory \fIdirpath\fP,
and calls \fIfn\fP() once for each entry in the tree.
By default, directories are handled before the files and
subdirectories they contain (pre-order traversal).

To avoid using up all a process's file descriptors, \fInopenfd\fP
specifies the maximum number of directories that \fBftw\fP()
will hold open simultaneously.
When
the search depth exceeds this, \fBftw\fP() will become slower because
directories have to be closed and reopened. \fBftw\fP() uses at most
one file descriptor for each level in the directory tree.

For each entry found in the tree,
.BR ftw ()
calls
\fIfn\fP() with three arguments:
.IR fpath ,
.IR sb ,
and
.IR typeflag .
.IR fpath
is the pathname of the entry relative to
.IR dirpath .
.IR sb
is a pointer to the
.IR stat
structure returned by a call to
.BR stat (2)
for
.IR fpath .
.IR typeflag ,
is an integer that has one of the following values:
.TP
.B FTW_F
.I fpath
is a normal file.
.TP
.B FTW_D
.I fpath
is a directory.
.TP
.B FTW_DNR
.I fpath
is a directory which can't be read.
.TP
.B FTW_NS
The
.BR stat (2)
call failed on
.IR fpath ,
which is not a symbolic link.
.LP
If
.I fpath
is a symbolic link and
.BR stat (2)
failed, POSIX.1 states
that it is undefined whether \fBFTW_NS\fP or \fBFTW_SL\fP (see below)
is passed in
.IR typeflag .
.PP
To stop the tree walk, \fIfn\fP() returns a non-zero value; this
value will become the return value of \fBftw\fP().
As long as \fIfn\fP() returns 0,
\fBftw\fP() will continue either until it has traversed the entire tree,
in which case it will return zero,
or until it encounters an error other than EACCES
(such as a
.BR malloc (3)
failure), in which case it will return \-1.
.PP
Because \fBftw\fP() uses dynamic data structures, the only safe way to
exit out of a tree walk is to return a non-zero value from \fIfn\fP().
To allow a signal to terminate the walk without causing a memory leak,
have the handler set a global flag that is checked by \fIfn\fP().
.I Don't
use
.BR longjmp (3)
unless the program is going to terminate.
.SS nftw()
The function \fBnftw\fP() is the same as \fBftw\fP(),
except that it has one additional argument, \fIflags\fP,
and calls \fIfn\fP() with one more argument, \fIftwbuf\fP.

This \fIflags\fP argument is formed by ORing zero or more of the
following flags:
.TP
.B FTW_CHDIR
If set, do a
.BR chdir (2)
to each directory before handling its contents.
This is useful if the program needs to perform some action
in the directory in which \fBfpath\fP resides.
.TP
.B FTW_DEPTH
If set, do a post-order traversal, that is, call \fIfn\fP() for
the directory itself \fI

Bug#368684: nagios3: segfault caused by p1.pl being installed incorrectly

2006-05-23 Thread Matt Brown
Package: nagios3
Version: 2.3-1
Severity: normal

(this problem is being experienced on a self-made backport, so I've
chosen normal rather than important as the priority. However I'm 99%
sure this problem would also be exhibited in unstable but haven't had
time to check).

When the embedded perl interpreter is enabled the Nagios binary looks
for a script called p1.pl in $(bindir) (set to /usr/sbin by configure),
however the debian package moves this file from $(bindir) to
/usr/lib/nagios2. This causes the following error when the daemon is
started:

  orwell:~# nagios2 /etc/nagios/nagios.cfg

  Nagios 2.3
  Copyright (c) 1999-2006 Ethan Galstad (http://www.nagios.org)
  Last Modified: 05-03-2006
  License: GPL

  Nagios 2.3 starting... (PID=21189)
Can't open perl script "/usr/sbin/p1.pl": No such file or directory

After roughly one minute the process exits. The log file contains

  [1148444358] Nagios 2.3 starting... (PID=21221)
  [1148444358] LOG VERSION: 2.0
  [114832] Caught SIGSEGV, shutting down...

Moving p1.pl to /usr/sbin (either physically or via symlink) resolves
the problem and appears to make Nagios operate correctly.

Please escalate this to important if you agree that this is likely to
affect the packages in unstable as well.

Cheers

Bug#368633: partman: LVM automatic partitioning not undoable

2006-05-23 Thread ERIIX M. Blaike
On Tue, 2006-05-23 at 21:54 +0200, Geert Stappers wrote:
> Please confirm that you mean 'MaY' (and not 'MaRch')
Sorry. Timestamp from the wrong iso. May 14 16:24 is the timestamp
from the one in question.

> Please tell us more about what you did.

I played around some in the disc, but the important step for
reproduction is simply to choose the LVM option in the guided
partitioning -- "Erase entire disk and use LVM" -- and you will be left
with, IIRC, /boot and an LVM partition (activated) that has some drives
in it. The point is that it has already committed the changed partition
table and saved the LVM data into the space left for LVM. Feel free to
try it, but I would advise doing so only on an emulated disc or on a
drive that has nothing important (or you have a backup of).

(Semi-)Detailed Walkthrough (I'm going along in qemu as I write this):
1: Get to partman (how you get there should be irrelevant)
2: In the guided partitioning, choose "Erase entire disk and use LVM"
3: Choose any of the partitioning schemes presented (I used seperate
home on my laptop, and have now confirmed all in one partition under
qemu -- I'm sure the many filesystem option will be similar)
4: Choose whatever name you want for the Volume Group
4a: Partition table is thrashed and LVM partition is activated and set
up (data being written even outside the partition table)
5: You can now confirm using fdisk that the partition table has been
changed to the new, LVM-equipped one. Since the LVM partition was
activated and the VG set up, data in the partition(s) that were where it
now is may no longer exist.

> My default is to take the complain serious.
> But I make the addition that if have my doubts about it,
> so please tell how to reproduce the problem.

Done, but do be careful if you wish to follow the walkthrough.

> (right now is the original poster the one with the problem,
> when he can convince other that the problem concerns others
> then it more likely he will get help with "his problem")

Actually, my problem is done and gone. I lost almost everything on my
laptop due primarilly to my own inattention. I knew that LVM setup
in partman proper requires saving the partition table and should have
realized from this that the guided partitioning would have to play by
the same rules. I just don't want anyone else in this situation.

Bug#360040: Totem freezes by "Open Location"

2006-05-23 Thread Ryuichi Arafune
Hello,

Unfortunately, I have not got the official totem 1.4.0-1, yet. I
accept that the 1.4.0 version that i used is the unofficial
(self-build) package. I'm sorry for your confusing. However, the
main reason why I have to build the totem package by myself is the
original version (1.2.1 or something) has the same problem (totem
freezes by "Open Location"). I have re-tested today, and I found the
current official (1.2.1-4) has still same problem.

Could you please what I must check to fix this problem.

Regards,

Bug#368683: linux-source-2.6.16: menuconfig should say what the raw default is

2006-05-23 Thread gambarimasu+reportbug
Package: linux-source-2.6.16
Version: 2.6.16-13
Severity: normal

menuconfig provides defaults, and it also sometimes gives hints like
"if you're all like 'WTF?' then you can safely say Y here".

that's nice, but was that default there because of my old .config? or
is it a real default?

menuconfig should say:

o the default if you leave it alone
o the raw default (as if you had no previous .config)

these are different things.

i leave severity at normal because i think this much usability affects
a lot of users who struggle with menuconfig. please feel free to
change it.

i report here instead of kernel.org because i think reportbug should
allow that, and many maintainers do forward upstream.

thanks for maintaining the debian kernels.

Yeah, I noticed that. I have no idea what the problem is -- I did build
the package with pbuilder before I uploaded it, so it should build
cleanly. Unfortunately, I'm travelling for another couple of weeks, so I
won't be able to work on this. Hopefully someone else notices the
problem and has time to fix things. My apologizes for messing things up.

This is the way that kernel images have always
functioned. Unfortunately, this bug report and some debconf6 chats
were the first I have heard about this, so I am not sure how to
handle this. Discussion with the d-i team folks seem to indicate that
the behaviour of kernel package need not change, which is welcome
news. I would much rather not change the default and unleash kernel
 upgrades on unsuspecting users.

Bug#368680: ntop: errant process takes over all cpu

2006-05-23 Thread Adam Kessel
Package: ntop
Version: 2:3.0-5
Severity: normal

Whenever we run ntop for a while (a day or two, sometimes shorter) on a
fairly standard Debian sarge system, one of the ntop processes gets out
of hand and takes all available CPU cycles, and thus needs to be killed.

The only thing that might be a bit different about this system is the
custom kernel, currently 2.6.16.2. If a kernel issue could be
implicated, I can provide the kernel config, but it seems to me
unlikely.

Any ideas about how to better isolate the problem and prevent it from
happening?

As the submitter of the patch stated, no functional testing of the
package with this change has been done. Something is wrong with the nss
examples build in libxmlsec1-dev. Although I don't think it's related
to the patch, I'm not prepared to do an upload without getting this
basic regression test to work again. I'm on vacation through the U.S.
holiday weekend and have some other obligations so it may be a week or
so before I can investigate this.

This is interesting. Can you try GCC 3.4 and 4.1 and let me know if you
have any better luck with either of those? Also, have you had the same
problem on i386?

Bug#338956: (That's the expected behaviour)

2006-05-23 Thread David L. Anselmi

Alberto Gonzalez Iniesta wrote:

Hi,

On upgrade, only running VPNs are restarted, that's the desired
behaviour. Those not running are down because you didn't want them up.
On upgrade they shouldn't be started then.

Sorry, but I don't understand. Are you saying that when
stop2upgrade=true no VPNs should be running after the upgrade? I hope
the below isn't too tedious and I'd enjoy learning why the package
behaves as it does.

Here is the current behavior:

stop2upgrade=false

VPNs are left up during the upgrade and restarted by the postinst
script (using cond-restart || restart). This makes sense.

stop2upgrade=true

All VPNs are stopped by the prerm script. When the postinst script
runs cond-restart it refuses to start anything because nothing is running.

I don't think that leaving all VPNs off is the desired behavior. If it
is, could that be made more clear in the debconf template? It is clear
that if you answer no then VPNs will be restarted after upgrade.
Clearly, answering yes means they will be stopped before the upgrade but
nothing is said about restarting them. To me it is surprising that they
should be left off so this should be said explicitly if that is the intent.

I can imagine that communicating from the prerm which VPNs were stopped
so only those can be started in the postinst isn't an easy thing. But I
don't see any use to the current behavior so perhaps stop2upgrade should
be removed?

Thanks for your help and I appreciate your work maintaining openvpn.

Bug#368678: setmixer: Please don't conflict with alsa-base or aumix

2006-05-23 Thread Lennart Poettering
Package: setmixer
Severity: normal

setmixer shouldn't conflict with alsa-base or aumix. The CLI tool
works perfectly in conjunction with both of them, the only problem is
the init script. IANADD, but I think the policy forbids to put
alsa-base/aumix in the "Conflicts:" field in such a case.

The correct fix would be to fix the init script to stop if either
aumix or alsa-base is found. (Just as aumix currently does it with
alsa-base).

setmixer is quite a useful tool, but due to the Conflicts line with
alsa-base I am currently unable to use it.

I still think that adding an extra header is unneccessary. We already
have the standards version in the control file. The next standards
version could require the build-arch/indep targets to be present and
dpkg-buildpackage could test for the version.

This would, going by the letter, make existing packages in debian
buggy. BUT it would not make any package suddenly unbuildable and we
could easily enough restraing ourself from needlessly reporting this
as a bug till after etch.

For those who claim that requiring build-arch/indep tragets would
waste space in debian/rules a simple "build%:" target, meaning an
increase of 1 char, will do.

MfG
Goswin

PS: Has anyone counted how many sources don't have build-arch?

I'll ask, but again, this is a library package, so the binary package name
is going to match the name of the library on disk. So really we're only
arguing about the name of the source package.

My guess is that upstream isn't going to be particularly thrilled with the
idea of changing the SONAME and name of the library on disk for aesthetic
reasons, given the backward compatibility issues.

If it happens again can you send the output of stat(1) run against the

had to guess I'd say that something isn't handling sub-second timestamp

problem.

Actually, on second thought, I don't see how this can happen. Those
files should be generated earlier in the postinst before we try to
chmod/chgrp them. Does /etc/ssl/private not exist on that machine when
openssl is installed?

This is odd. When I did a build in pbuilder, the build did indeed fail and
then when I added xprint-utils to the build-depends, the build succeeded.
This wasn't untested by any means and I didn't just put it in there for the
hell of it. I don't know what changed, but at this point I really don't
care enough to investigate. Anyway, I'll apply your fix.

Package: cyrus-doc-2.2
Version: 2.2.13-3

Installation Overview

This system should be expected to have the same order-of-magnitude
installation complexity as a netnews system. Maintenance should have
similar complexity, except administrators will have to deal with
*creation and deletion of users* and will have the option of managing
quotas and access control lists.

The material between the *'s is a hyperlink to
file:///usr/share/doc/cyrus-doc-2.2/html/cyradm.1.html, which does not
exist.

I see there are a lot of man pages under html/man, but not cyradm.
Also, since I have the docs to preview an install, I don't have the
real man page.

I doubt there's anything critical there, but I thought I'd let you
know since I noticed it.

Hello, Joel. I was (again) unable to know if your fix was in the 1.2.1
release, as the web interface for your SVN does not tell me *anything* about
revisions, apart from the number of the last one.

When I was talking about a changelog, I was not kidding. It is
difficult to
know what changes you make to the software if you point the people to
download the full SVN repo and run a svn log -rX:Y as the only way of knowing
it. Please consider: a) use of viewcvs in the server, b) making a proper
changelog, at least in releases.

If it was harsh, it was not on purpose. English is not my mother
tongue,
sorry.

The user has reported that the bug is gone, so I think it could be
closed.

Best regards,

Ender.

Bug#368675: cyrus-doc-2.2: UPGRADE.Debian typo

2006-05-23 Thread Ross Boylan
Package: cyrus-doc-2.2
Version: 2.2.13-3
Severity: minor

It now says:

Upgrading form cyrus 2.1

I think that should be "from", not "form". It gave me a moment's pause
since I thought it might be "for", which might have the sense of
upgrading *to* 2.1. From the following para the meaning is clear.

Hmm, while I'm at it, the same section says "The information how to do
upgrade your database files is contained in the upgrade information
from cyrus v1.6 below." There is no 1.6 sections below, though the
upgrading from 1.5.x section says "The procedure for converting a v1.6
cyrus store to v2.2 is not explained here, but the tools to convert
the sieve scripts are in /usr/lib/cyrus/upgrade."

So I think what this means is "The information how to do
upgrade your database files is contained in the upgrade information
from cyrus 1.5 below."

Bug#362564: lvm-on-cryptroot not working yet.

2006-05-23 Thread Arjan Oosting
found bugnumber 362564
thanks

Hi David and Jonas,

Sorry I did not respond earlier when there where updated scripts
available. (Busy with work and university stuff). Thanks for adding the
support for initramfs lvm-on-cryptroot to cryptsetup.

I just upgraded and found to little bugs. First of all the lvm option is
not saved in the hook script. After I fixed that it still would not work
for me because I actually have *lvm2-on-cryptroot* and fstype gives
FSTYPE=lvm2 on my machine.

I have included two small patches which should fix this and took the
liberty to reopen the bug for now.

Greetings Arjan

p.s. If you have anymore questions/remarks I will try to respond more
quickly.

Bug#367125: knfsd / bad inode number on ext3

2006-05-23 Thread Ristuccia, Brian
We're also seeing this bug with 2.6.15 after replacing disks in an NFS
server. It seems worth mentioning that the new filesystem has fewer
inodes, both in use and available total than the old filesystem.

In the kernel source, look at nfs_vfs_read() in fs/nfsd/vfs.c. It's
called through about a half-dozen other functions from the top level
nfsd_proc_read(). It looks like it's getting the inode number from a
structure which originated in the NFS read request itself and I don't
see anything doing validation. The code in ext3 appears to assume that
the only source of unchecked inode numbers is the filesystem itself
(like a corrupted directory), so attempting to access one which does not
exist is an error that triggers the filesystem error behavior (continue,
remount-ro, or panic).

I see a similar report from late 2003 on RH's web site at
http://www.redhat.com/archives/ext3-users/2003-December/msg00024.html ,
which suggests it's a longstanding but infrequently occurring bug.

The exporter's method of generating the fsid also seems suspect. The
exports manual page says it's generated from the block device
major/minor but maybe it ought to come from the filesystem UUID instead
to avoid the case where clients have stale FH's pointing at non-existent
or wrong files if a filesystem needs to be remade. Such a method would
also avoid unnecessary E_STALE's when the physical attachment of disks
in a system changes. I'll open a separate bug for that problem.

Thanks again Michael. I've not had a chance to explore the new apt. So
for now I've reverted to placing the output of dumpavail into a
temporary file. Not the best solution, but the simplest just at present.

This bug fix will be in 2.0.33 of wajig after I've tested it a bit more.

Bug#368539: kernel-package: localversion* files not supported?

2006-05-23 Thread Manoj Srivastava
Hi,

Yes, patches are applied too late in the process to support
them modifying the kernel version. Currently, the first step taken by
make-kpkg is to create a ./debian; and this involves also creating
 ./debian/changelog.

Applying the patch manually before invoking make-kpkg works
 quite well.

The second part of the bug report is about a user error; since
somehow the debian revision was set to -mattia.

Support for this feature seem to require very hackish kludges.

There's no 2.0.2-3 binaries for powerpc (see below on your own info,
although I wonder why reportbug added 2.0.2-3 for "openoffice.org"; did
you enter that manually?)...
Maybe some incompatibility between -3 _all and -2 _powerpc stuff,
although I currentlly don't see what should be incompatible there...

Bug#368672: w3m: ergonomics for scrolling

2006-05-23 Thread gambarimasu+reportbug
Package: w3m
Version: 0.5.1-4
Severity: normal

scrolling by page (e.g. by page up) can be improved by making it reversible.

reversible means that you get to the end of the page, hit page up, and
the screen will look exactly like it did before you hit page up. this
can be done by inserting blank lines or lines consisting of ~ (a la vi
or less), perhaps with another indicator, such as reverse video on the
last line.

scrolling should give you an indication of where you were before the
scroll. making scrolling reversible does this by always having the
last line you read at the top of the screen.

cf. less(1) which lets you highlight the last line you read.

Yes, you are right. I should have read and thought harder
before I wrote that... My apologies.

In 2.34, the tmpnam.3 man page will include the following
para:

Although tmpnam(3) generates names that are difficult to
guess, it is nevertheless possible that between the time
that tmpnam(3) returns a pathname, and the time that the
program opens it, another program might create that pathnam
using open(2), or create it as a symbolic link. This can
lead to security holes. To avoid such possibilities, use
the open(2) O_EXCL flag to open the pathname. Or better
yet, use mkstemp(3) or tmpfile(3).

I added similar text to temnam.3.

I also removed the text "POSIX dictates tmpnam(3)" from mktemp.3.

Thanks Justin and Chris for your input.

Cheers,

Michael

What is "a core"?

It's a file (aptly called 'core', sometimes 'core.$PID') created by
the OS if a process crashes. The file contains information about the
process the moment it crashed and can help in debugging. This is also
called 'throwing a core' or 'core dump'.

The file is not always created for various reasons. If it is not,

I suppose the file should be created in the user's home directory, which
 it is not.

That's the ouput of ulimit -a

network-manager-openvpn package in Debian as of now.
So every time dhcdbd updates the resolv.conf file, my openvpn
connection is broken and i must restart openvpn (/etc/init.d/openvpn
restart).
Till network-manager-openvpn is not avaible in the debian repos, i
suggest to use the dhcdbd "uint32 mode" 1 and/or 2.

1: turns off modification of resolv.conf
2: turns off all ifconfig actions

There is an example in the README file of the dhcdbd package.

I am using an up-to-date (may 23.) Debian GNU/Linux SID (unstable),
kernel 2.6.15
and libc6 2.3.6-9.

I'd really rather stick with the upstream name, particularly since this is
a library package and the library is also called libxml-security-c. Other
applications depend on this library and, when they do, their documentation
says to install XML-Security-C; I think calling it C++ instead would
confuse people.

Inasmuch as PostgreSQL has a cursor concept, it would be most excelent

Do you have screenshots, or take any if it reproduces?

Idea:

Include a screenshot program a la

that is available to the d-i http log file server

The GTK frontend is already provided with a "screenshot" button, meant
to ease reporting problems about bad font rendering etc..
PNGs are saved into /var/log and can be retrived via HTTP after "save
installation log" has been pressed and the netcat-based web server started.

Does the screenshot function fails on PPC systems?

Yes, I can grep too, you know ;-).

The point is that simply having a link to a page that doesn't
even mention the function (crypt.3 contains no mention of fcrypt())
is mysterious for the reader. *If* there is to be a link, then
the page should mention actuall mention the function, and explain
why there are two functions, and what the (current or historical)
differences between them are. Offhand, I don't know the answer.
Hence, not so simple...

I've commented out the NOTE section, since it seems to me

.SH NAME
offsetof \- offset of a structure member
.SH SYNOPSIS
\fB#include

\fBsize_t offsetof(\fItype\fP, \fPmember\fP);
.SH DESCRIPTION
The macro \fBoffsetof\fP() returns the offset of the field
\fImember\fP from the start of the structure \fItype\fP.

This macro is useful because the sizes of the fields that compose
a structure can vary across implementations,
and compilers may insert different numbers of padding
bytes between fields.
Consequently, an element's offset is not necessarily
given by the sum of the sizes of the previous elements.

A compiler error will result if
\fImember\fP is not aligned to a byte boundary
(i.e., it is a bit field).
.SH "RETURN VALUE"
\fBoffsetof\fP() returns the offset of the given element within the
given type, in units of bytes.
.SH EXAMPLE
On a Linux/x86 system, when compiled using the default \fBgcc\fP(1)
options, the program below produces the following output:
.fi

$ ./a.out
offsets: i=0; c=4; d=8 a=16
sizeof(struct s)=16

.nf
.nf
#include
#include
#include

{
struct s {
int i;
char c;
double d;
char a[];
};

/* Output is compiler dependent */

printf("offsets: i=%ld; c=%ld; d=%ld a=%ld\\n",
(long) offsetof(struct s, i),
(long) offsetof(struct s, c),
(long) offsetof(struct s, d),
(long) offsetof(struct s, a));
printf("sizeof(struct s)=%ld\\n", (long) sizeof(struct s));

exit(EXIT_SUCCESS);

The only negative comment from Adam Heath are about the lack of dpkg
patch, but such patch was duly provided. There is a negative comment
from Scott James Remnant but he was not part of the part of the initial
discussion (he became the dpkg maintainer 6 months after the discusion)
and did not get to the root of the matter.

I agree that this is not documented in the bug log (because it was not
actually proposed there), but doogie was quite vocal about it at the time
on IRC (to the point of /ignore-ing mrvn for merely suggestig the idea).
Anyway the opinion of the current dpkg maintainers is more important.

You are not exactly wrong: there is not a lot of evidence we will get
an answer from the new dpkg maintainers any time soon. Maybe you could
ping the bug #229357, you might have more success than I did.

Okay -- hold off a moment. I will pull at least some pieces out
of the existing patch, and then send you a revised version of
the page.

(And yes, sorry for not saying so earlier, but thanks for the
work. It's just that when I get an unexplained patch like
that, I just need to put on the brakes somewhat -- it takes
time to grok large patches that do multiple things. If you want
to get them upstream, then it's best to let me know of the plan
a little in advance, and to break the work up.)

Cheers,

Michael

Correction: packages have already been uploaded, so we only need to wait
for the security team's approval of the stable upload.

(Yes, there is a secret club that coordinates these things before the
publication of the security issue.)

Oh? Must've missed that, then.

I disagree (I went through the bug's log before providing the patch); He
made clear that the debian/rules.* stuff was not an option in his eyes,
but I didn't see him mention that making build-{arch,indep} would not be
what he wanted to happen.

Of course, I didn't read every letter of every mail, so I could've
missed it.

Fair enough.

I proposed this patch because I had not seen any action and therefore
assumed nothing was happening anymore. If that's wrong, so much the
better.

Bug#368666: bash: path searching breaks when deleting binary

2006-05-23 Thread Sanjoy Mahajan
Package: bash
Version: 3.1-4
Severity: normal

If you delete an executable on bash's PATH, it keeps looking for it
there anyway and then complains:

  $ mkdir /tmp/bin /tmp/binbin
  $ touch /tmp/{bin,binbin}/x
  $ chmod +x /tmp/{bin,binbin}/x
  $ PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/tmp/bin:/tmp/binbin
  $ which x
  /tmp/bin/x
(the above is correct)
  $ x
(now delete it:)
  $ rm /tmp/bin/x
  $ which x
  /tmp/binbin/x
(the above is correct)
  $ x
bash: /tmp/bin/x: No such file or directory

whereas it should run /tmp/binbin/x (esp. since 'which' knows about
it!).

Subject: Bug#367424: bacula-sd: Debian build with debug symbols

Package: bacula-sd
Version: 1.38.9-9
Followup-For: Bug #367424

Hi!

Now I've compiled the debian source with debug symbols.

Here is, wat i did:

apt-get source bacula
cd bacula-1.38.9/
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="noopt nostrip" dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -us -uc -B

After the build I copy the bacula-sd from
bacula-1.38.9/debian/tmp-build-mysql/src/stored/bacula-sd to
/usr/sbin/bacula-sd then I started the daemon with /etc/init.d/bacula-sd start.

The error was:

Bug#368653: [Fwd: Re: Bug#368653: Package: libpam-mysql: passwd bug report]

2006-05-23 Thread Robin Williams

As far as I am aware it is correct, all are specified as table.column..
I even did an apt-get remove --purge and reinstalled with new config
files, re-filling in the appropriate variables to make sure the config
files hadn't changed too much. The /etc/nss-mysql.* files, I kept all
the defaults and simply changed the password (as all my settings are
default). The /etc/pam.d files I kept the same, and they all look
similar to:

password sufficient pam_unix.so nullok obscure min=4 max=8 md5
password required pam_mysql.so nullok ignore_root user=nss-shadow
passwd=mypass db=nss_mysql usercolumn=user.user_name crypt=1 try_first_pass

Further than this, I'm unsure what else to try out. Maybe I am missing
something. I admit I am not an expert on libpam..

Bug#368229: There is no existing pre-compiled i386 downgrade

2006-05-23 Thread Gnaural
Hi,

I really gave anjuta2 a try, even rebuilt gnome-build
from source, etc., but in the end, I just don't want
to use Anjuta2 until it has at least some basic
Project functionality.

Problem is, I found no pre-compiled way to downgrade
back to my last working version. Seems the current
Testing debs in all the mirrors are actually from the
non-functional anjuta_1.2.4-1+b1_i386.deb batch, and
stable's anjuta_1.2.2-9_i386.deb doesn't work either.

I remembered last January when both first went sour,
and the precompiled solution was ultimately provided
by anjuta_1.2.4a-2_i386.deb .

Problem: that deb isn't available on any debian
mirrors, only the source and patch.

Not being in the mood to go through recompiling that
again, I just did an FTP search and found exactly one
existant copy of anjuta_1.2.4a-2_i386.deb -- on an
Ubuntu site, ironically enough. Probably is the debian
one, certainly works enough
to allow me to program again:
ftp://140.113.168.127/distributions/ubuntu/package/pool/universe/a/anjuta/anjuta_1.2.4a-2_i386.deb

I think the guy that said "split Anjuta1 and Anjuta2"
was right -- to offer both through apt-get would allow
people with gigantic Projects that are left
dead-in-the-water with Anjuta2 to keep working, and
encourage them to try to start new projects with
Anjuta2. When Debian's Anjuta2 can actually handle
projects, I mean.

Thanks

Just for note, the failure in stopping nscd in the previous transcript should
be due to a
persistent cache corruption, see #336310. The daemon dies on assert just after
starting, or so...

[snipping my own message]

ConTeXt is a TeX format, roughly comparable to LaTeX. If you don't know
this, then you probably did not install this updated but incomplete
ConTeXt into /usr/share/texmf.

Are files like /usr/share/texmf/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex owned by
any Debian package, ie what is the output of

dpkg -S /usr/share/texmf/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex

? There are no special ConTeXt packages in Debian, but maybe somebody
created something for Kanotix? It is quite some time ago since I last
used Kanotix. But it may well be that this is not only not a teTeX
issue, but also not a Debian issue.

Bug#364584: Potential workaround

2006-05-23 Thread Morgan, Tom
Title: Potential workaround

I did not receive all of the errors in the original report, but did receive some of them.  This one (and related ones) were most prominent:

/bin/bash: error while loading shared libraries: libdl.so.2: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

Anyway, it seemed to be fixed by forcing an upgrade of initrd-tools from 0.1.81.1 to 0.1.84.1 and modutils 2.4.26-1.2 to 2.4.27-0.5.  It could be only one of them; I forced both upgrades at once.

Hi guys,

I don't know if you tried to follow up on this, but it appears that
the problem was on my side. The mirror I use for updates is broken and
I did not get all of the required Xorg packages for the upgrade. I've
moved to a new mirror, did a full dist-upgrade this morning, and the
problem is well and truly fixed.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks again for doing a great job!

Bug#368556: Unable to reproduce

2006-05-23 Thread Filipus Klutiero

retitle 368556 crashes with SIGABRT on startup with a certain configuration
severity 368556 important
thanks

Thanks for the additional information. I'm downgrading to important
since this doesn't seem to affect several machines. If other people
experience this bug, please report.
Alberto, is unplugging the cable/turning the scanner off before kooka
startup a complete workaround, which lets you use kooka for scanning
even with this user? Until you can identify which configuration is
problematic, please report if you're able to reproduce this issue with a
second user
