Bug#970752: Subject: open-vm-tools: ConditionVirtualization=vmware was not met
Hi, The following condition caused the failure: ConditionVirtualization=vmware was not met After commenting it out vmtoolsd started successfully. For what it's worth, the same condition fails in VMware vmplayer. please run systemd-detect-virt and show the output, then install systemd from buster-backports and run it again and see if it makes a difference.
