Bug#677013: RFS: time
Hi Bob, The previous package maintainers are also copyright holders of debian/* so debian/copyright needs an update for that. Please talk to the previous maintainers if there is doubt on the license(s) for debian/*. The package uses source format 3.0 (quilt) but does not really use quilt, so debian/README.source can be removed. The file debian/copyright should name the original authors, and David Keppel is such an author. The years in the main copyright notice are not correct. For example, time.c additionally has 1990, 91, 92. Regards, Bart Martens -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-mentors-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#678500: RFS: cppreference-doc/20120620-1 [ITP] -- C and C++ standard library reference manual for English language.
Hello, Quoting p12 (2012-06-22 10:31:08) Package: sponsorship-requests Severity: wishlist Dear mentors, I am looking for a sponsor for my package cppreference-doc. It contains a downloaded copy of a free online wiki [1] that specializes in C and C++ reference and scripts for converting it to formats suitable for offline viewing (these are executed at build time). Almost identical package has been maintained in my Ubuntu personal package archive [2] for over half year. The scripts are maintained here [3]. The debian packaging is maintained here [4]. The upstream tarball is released once in several months and can be obtained here [5]. I haven't tried the other tarballs though. --- General information --- * Package name: cppreference-doc * Version : 20120620-1 * Upstream Author : Cppreference contributors (content), p12 tir...@yahoo.co.uk (packaging) * URL : http://en.cppreference.com/w/Cppreference:Archives * License : various: CC-BY-SA / GDFL, CC-BY-SA, GPL-3+ (see debian/copyright for more details) * Section : doc It builds those binary packages: * cppreference-doc-en - C++ standard library reference manual for English language * cppreference-doc-en-html - C and C++ standard library reference manual for English language * cppreference-doc-en-qch - C++ standard library reference manual for English language To access further information about this package, please visit the following URL: http://mentors.debian.net/package/cppreference-doc Alternatively, one can download the package with dget using this command: dget -x http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/c/cppreference-doc/cppreference-doc_20120620-1.dsc First, let me say that I am not a DD nor DM, and thus cannot sponsor your package. Nonetheless, a few remarks: In debian/control, wget and httracks are in Build-Depends. It seems to be a mistake since the build process doesn't download anything. In any case, the build process should be self-contained and not require network access. Why do you need the Replaces/Breaks fields for ? Those packages have never been in Debian AFAICT. debian/cppreference-doc-en.install and debian/docs are empty, you can just delete them. I don't know about the Devref stuff, but you might want to install the stuff in /usr/share/doc/* using dh_installdocs. I might very well be wrong though. Since the purpose of the package is to provide documentation, it would be really nice to provide some doc-base informations. Lintian has some minor nitpicks, some easy to fix. Run lintian -EvIiL +pedantic on your .changes file to see what those are as well as their explanations. I am not sure in what extent this is mandatory for non-D[MD]s, but people in Debian usually disclose their civilian name. If you intend to apply for DM or DD status, you would have to disclose it eventually for the keysigning process. About the README.source, I am not exactly sure of how this all works on the upstream side, but it would be nice to provide a get-orig-source target to easily build the complete tarball. Cheers, Simon signature.asc Description: signature

Hi, So, my question about Git is: should I start it from the initial release, or from the actual one ? When using a git-buildpackage workflow, git-import-dsc makes it trivial to import the full history, especially for a native package such as yours. Bug#677013: RFS: time
Hi Bart, Bart Martens wrote: The file debian/copyright should name the original authors, and David Keppel is such an author. Thank you for taking the time to look at the copyright file in detail. I admit the new DEP5 format confuses me. I need to find some actual examples in the field of more than the very simple examples listed in the documentation. I am working from this document: http://dep.debian.net/deps/dep5/ Where would I find such a statement in the documentation? How would this be defined in the file? How would we comply with that statement within the restrictions of the above documentation? The copyright holder is of course the FSF. That is the copyright statement listed in each of the files. Should I list the original authors in a Comment: field? I see no other way. Help! The previous package maintainers are also copyright holders of debian/* so debian/copyright needs an update for that. Please talk to the previous maintainers if there is doubt on the license(s) for debian/*. I walked through the Debian changelog and compiled a list of contributors and years from it. The years in the main copyright notice are not correct. For example, time.c additionally has 1990, 91, 92. Good catch. I definitely missed that. And not sure where I pulled that line from. And getopt.c goes back to 1987. I walked through every source file and compiled a list of copyright years from each file. It seems that I can also collapse the license definition somewhat too. Working through the above this is the next release candidate version. How does this look? Any additional comments concerning this? Such as how to name the original authors? snip Format: http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/ Upstream-Name: time Source: http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/time/time-1.7.tar.gz Files: * Copyright: Copyright 1987-1996 Free Software Foundation, Inc. On Debian systems, the full text of the GNU General Public License version 2 can be found in the file `/usr/share/common-licenses/GPL-2'. snip The package uses source format 3.0 (quilt) but does not really use quilt, so debian/README.source can be removed. I was working from the Debian quilt howto here which said it was required. Of course that is explicitly for Perl but for this aspect it shouldn't matter. http://pkg-perl.alioth.debian.org/howto/quilt.html#readme_source I find it annoying so am happy to remove it. But I find your statement that the quilt format doesn't use quilt surprising! And in fact it was required specifically that I convert the package to use the quilt format. Bart Martens ba...@debian.org writes: The previous package maintainers are also copyright holders of debian/* so debian/copyright needs an update for that. While a package sponsor can of course ask for whatever they'd like before being willing to sponsor a package, I do think it's worth noting that the majority of packages in Debian do not record the copyright statements for all contributors to the debian/* packaging, nor is this something that we're enforcing on an archive-wide basis. It's a nice thing to do, but I'm not sure how important it really is given that all those contributions are already documented in debian/changelog. The file debian/copyright should name the original authors, and David Keppel is such an author. For the purposes of satisfying this portion of Policy, I think that treating authors as meaning the same thing as copyright holders is quite reasonable. For GNU software, that means the Free Software Foundation, as that's what's listed in all the copyright statements. I think asking people to document more authorship than upstream provides in upstream's copyright statements is asking for quite a lot, and also is a standard that we are not following in most of the rest of the archive. I certainly don't bother to do that with my packages; documenting upstream's copyright notices seems sufficient to me. If upstream doesn't consider it important enough to record, I don't consider it a mandatory part of being a Debian package maintainer to go do that historical research myself, assuming that there are no legal issues raised by the omission. If upstream provides a separate CREDITS or THANKS file supplementing their legal notices, I generally install that as a documentation file like any other (but don't bother to invent copyright notices for all the people listed there to add to debian/coypright). -- Russ Allbery (r...@debian.org) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-mentors-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
