[Bug 290978] [NEW] gnome-display-properties dialog takes up too much vertical space

2008-10-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The Screen Resolution settings dialog is 558 pixels in vertical height.
Since the purpose of this tool is to change resolution settings, it
ought to be usable on as wide a range of resolutions as possible.

As a minimum, it should target fitting within the standard VGA 640x480
size screen.

Reducing the vertical height from 558 to <480 is doable; this is an
optimization that was made for Hardy by adjusting the widget positioning
and spacing.

[Bug 285323] Re: Losing keyboard and mouse control when changing screen brightness with fn + arrow under intrepid

2008-10-29 Thread Bryan Quigley
For release notes:

== Using Brightness Function Key Combination Breaks Keyboard and Menus ==
On some laptops using the function key combination to change the brightness can
result in a loss of most keyboard control and an inability to fully open menus.

If you lose keyboard control do the following:
Ctrl-Alt-F1 - Brings you to a text console
Ctrl-Alt-F7 - Brings you back to your desktop

[Bug 187127] Re: ssh always asks to unlock private key with no password set

2008-10-29 Thread Martin Schmitt
Sorry, no time to do it on 8.10 right now, but here you go on 8.04:

---
groupadd martin2
useradd -g martin2 -d /home/martin2 -m -s /bin/bash martin2
passwd martin2
mkdir ~martin2/.ssh
cp ~martin/.ssh/id_dsa ~martin/.ssh/id_dsa.pub ~martin2/.ssh
chown -R martin2:martin2 ~martin2/.ssh

Log out from Gnome, log in as martin2.

Start Terminal.

1) ssh-add > Dialog pops up, Press "Deny", enter Passphrase in
Terminal
2) ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Dialog pops up, Press "Deny", Authentication
succeeds

Message from gnome-keyring-daemon in /var/log/auth.log: "couldn't find or load
public key for private key" - This is logged not upon ssh-add (Step 1) but upon
authentication (Step 2).
---

Seeing that upstream uses SSH keys without passphrase (see comment
above) while maintaining a security component, I trust this Gnome-Dialog
even less than before. :-(

Sorry should have added this :)
I am running Intrepid with f-spot 0.5.0.3

I happened to create somehow (?) more than one entry for the same Photo
in the catalog maybe during initial import from old fspot and importing

If I delete one entry the other entry points to a non existing file.
Trying to delete / open or remove the photo from catalog it crashes.

This did not happen every time and I managed to remove most of these
empty entries.

After reading tons, having no clue, flailing around, on both client and

System, Preference, Keyboard shortcuts, Desktop, Take a screenshot. It
was "Print", I pressed "Ctrl+PrtSc", it changed to "Ctrl+Print", and now
ALL the nav keys work fine.

[Bug 290967] [NEW] Gdm can't start

2008-10-29 Thread Genaro Diaz
Public bug reported:

My system runs Hardy 8.04 and after last 2008-10-27 update through the
update-manager, gdm refuses to start. It shows the mouse cursor for half
a second and then shows a dialog with the following Spanish phrase:

"Parece que la interfaz de entrada se cae. Se intentará usar una
diferente."

Which translates to:

"The greeter application appears to be crashing. Attempting to use a
different one."

I changed gdm to show debug information and am submitting the
/var/log/syslog. If requested I have /var/log/messages, lspci output and
dmesg output around. I can submit any additional information needed.

In any case, I am waiting for tomorrow Ibex 8.10 release for upgrading
this system, but will keep the bootable partition that shows this error
in case it may be helpful.

Thanks

Genaro

[Bug 213705] Re: (hardy) video play's slow when wireless is working on msi pr200

2008-10-29 Thread Pablo Estigarribia
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 198453 ***

Is it possible to fix it also in hardy?
I want to know if this LTS version is working fine, but actually I have
problems with pulseaudio that are fixed in next release on Interpid but not in
Hardy? Why? Is somebody working to port this fix into the stable LTS version?

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 198453

[Bug 250695] Re: Rythmbox freezes when using keyboard volume keys

2008-10-29 Thread Evan Nelson
Update:

I finally remembered to run rhythmbox from the terminal and induce this
problem. Without debug set (-d option), nothing interesting at all
happens. With debug mode set, something interesting happens: nothing.
That is, during the bug, output to the terminal just stops.

I start playing a song, and you start seeing lines like the following:

(20:27:59) [0x80dc408] [tick_cb] rb-shell-player.c:3223: tick:
[file:///media/sda2/music/Jack%20Johnson/Brushfire%20Fairytales/Jack%20Johnson%20-%201(01)%20Inaudible%20Melodies.MP3,

However, when I induce the problem and cause the system to free, output to the
terminal temporarily stops and is never recovered (notice the jump in system
time):

(20:28:26) [0x80dc408] [window_focus_cb] rb-mmkeys-plugin.c:118: window got

Note that music DOES continue to play during this system freeze, in
spite of the lack of terminal output.

[Bug 290647] Re: gconfd does not refresh cache when sudo-ing current user to modify setting

2008-10-29 Thread peitschie
The aforementioned workaround needs to have an appropriate XAUTHORITY
environment variable defined.

To sudo without doing this (e.g., from a command line process), try
something like the following:

# assumes the $USER and $HOME directories are defined somehow
DBUS_SESSION=$(grep -v "^#" $HOME/.dbus/session-bus/`cat
/var/lib/dbus/machine-id`-0)
sudo -u $USER $DBUS_SESSION gconftool-2 --type string --set /system/proxy/mode

[Bug 283426] Re: "New Login in a Window" fails

2008-10-29 Thread Paul Broadhead
> * Is this reproducible?
Yes every time.

> * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
Launch "Application->system Tools->New Login in a Window" icon or
"gdmflexiserver --xnest" from a terminal. "gdmflexiserver" no longer fails as
it did before.

 * Could you try using the current version? do you have the same issue using
other softwares?
I'm fully updated, gdm version is 2.20.8ubuntu3. Not sure what the second bit
is asking but I don't get this error for any other operation. However, I do
get the same error (terminal launch) when using the guest account so it appears
not to be a user configuration issue.

Could this be something to do with my screen resolution? The machine is
a laptop with (max) 1024x768 resolution.

[Bug 290910] [NEW] Analog Mix recording input muted in default 8.04/8.10 installs using Audigy 2 but is required to record sound

2008-10-29 Thread dcarpenter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I have an Audigy 2 sound card and in order to record sound, I have to
enable the the Analog Mix (Recording) input and turn up the volume
sliders. My microphone is plugged into the mic jack on my sound card.
Both the Mic volume slider and the Analog Mix slider must be turned up
to record any sound.

In a default install, I expect sound recording to work with absolutely no
tweaking whatsoever.

[Bug 205999] Re: Attachments names using "ç " are not correctly sent by Evolution (ATT .dat)

2008-10-29 Thread hggdh
Effenberg0x0, discussion kept on upstream until July, when it sort of
fizzled.

All: it is not Evolution in error, but the rest of the world ;-).

I know, I know... just a joke (could not resist). Evolution is doing the
Right Thing (TM), but Microsoft (and, per Milan upstream, pretty much
all other servers he could hit) are not. The format Evolution is using
*should* be accepted by others.

But it is not. So... disaster.

I strongly suggest that all of you go upstream and -- nicely, please! --
tell them you are having problems. Milan is even willing (or so it
seems) to fix it, but not many users complained about it so far. It may
be due to the fact that we strive very hard to be at the bleeding edge,
while most other distributions are still with Evo 2.22 or older.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: evolution

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
  Linux effenberg-mobile 2.6.24-12-generic #1 SMP Wed Mar 12 23:01:54 UTC 2008
i686 GNU/Linux
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ evolution --version
  GNOME evolution 2.22.0
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Attachments sent from Evolution to WIndows boxes using Outlook or
Outlook Express are converted to ATT.dat files, if the letter
"ç" is used in the attached file name. This is fully reproducible here,
in all our machines running fully updated Hardy. This problem persists
for at least two weeks now.

  -ç.xls, ç.doc, ç.ppt, ç.pdf, ç.gif, etc are received as ATT.dat.
  -c.xls, c.doc, c.ppt, c.pdf, c.gif, etc are received normally.

I have not extensively tested this with other letters peculiar of the
Brazilian Portuguese language, such as áéíóú, à, ã, âêô and ü, but since
it dosn't support "ç", there may be problems with using this letters
  too.

  Regards,
  Effenberg
+
+ WORKAROUND:
+
+ Use standard ASCII characters for the attachment file name. Do not add
+ special characters (including space). I am not sure how this would work
+ on Kanji, and others, though. A test would be appreciated.
+
+ It sucks. Please do not hit the messenger.
+
+ LAST VERSION TESTED:
+ Evolution Intrepid 2.24.1-0ubuntu2.
+ Evolution 2.25 SVN.

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards

2008-10-29 Thread Marc Tardif
>From the above comment, it should be noted that the following gstreamer
pipeline works just fine on laptops where cheese doesn't work:

  # gst-launch v4l2src name=video_source device=/dev/video0 !

Note how "identity" was changed for "gconfvideosink", which doesn't
quite reproduce the problem accurately.

I also get this bug - however for me it occurs if View->Browse is open or not.
Changing the volume using my keyboard volume key and the window temporarily
freezes, and also freezes any other window. I am not using desktop effects, I
am using Ubuntu Hardy 8.01. I have always had this problem since fresh install.

It does release after about two minutes.
