[Bug 689399] Re: evolution icons for delete/cancel are non-intuitive
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 693903 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/693903 I'm not sure how such issues are treated for LTS releases, but I believe this is still a problem in Lucid so possibly not a dupe. Do usability issues get LTS updates? I have since upgraded, but the icons were both red, I think. The cancel one has not changed, I believe the delete one had an exclamation mark. The distinction between the two is greater in Maverick, but still not great - bug 693903 can deal with that. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evolution in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/689399 Title: evolution icons for delete/cancel are non-intuitive -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 693903] Re: ambiguous icons in toolbar CANCEL vs DELETE
I think the little red X icons in the corners of every window (whence the window is deleted) are a pretty big clue that this shouldn't be used. In Firefox, there is no delete concept for a web page, so they are able to use it without concern for alternative meanings. Whilst the trash bin is an improvement for experienced users (at least you can figure it out), its lack of prominence is still an issue. Also, now the trash bin and the trash itself are both used, and right next to each other. Confusing for newer users. Delete is probably used in the order of hundreds of times more than cancel, so should easily get priority if there is competition for a visual cue. In fact, I have probably never used cancel in my life in a mail client. I would have to think about it to figure out why it's even there at all. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evolution in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/693903 Title: ambiguous icons in toolbar CANCEL vs DELETE -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 454301] Re: warning given about disk health due to smart not being enabled
Nice to know that natty also works on eee 701 though. (though without unity) SSD manufacturer's would probably be happy to help linux developers on this, seeing how it affects many of their users. Having SSDs work with ubuntu would also be a factor for buyers in choosing whether to upgrade a system to SSD. Is this really damaging the SSDs? Does the message still appear for newer SSDs? Status on LUCID 10.04, latest updates kernel for it: On an EEE 701 i'm using, (512mb Ram), the message still appears after suspend / hibernate. Which I guess is expected since that's when all the data from RAM is stored on the hard disk. gdu-notification-daemon A hard disk may be failing. One or more hard disks report health problems. Click the icon to get more information. When you click on the icon on panel (with orange exclamation point): 4.0 GB hard disk - ATA Siliconmotion SM223AC in red: DISK IS BEING USED OUTSIDE DESIGN PARAMETERS But usually no message appears (aside from another one that says my battery is defective, which is another story). If I may (as it might not be related but then please direct me to the correct branch) I can no longer override any of the fixed applications settings, e.g. system terminal: 1. GNOME Terminal is already one of the predefined applications, 2. choose Custom, 3. put in gnome-terminal as a command, 4. as soon as you put l in the text field, selection switches to predefined GNOME Terminal with fixed -x flag, therefore you cannot add any more flags like --full-screen for that matter. VLC still continues to work correctly, and this application still plays mp3 audio files, but no avi, flv, or any other video file will play correctly. They start playing but with no audio, then an error message comes up. Matt, throwing the mouse at the left edge, even with any necessary-but- short delay is still less time/work for the user than the currently inefficient method. Also, having to resort to the keyboard to overcome this issue is not a valid workaround, imo. [Bug 755283] Re: plain text in shortcuts prevent typing that character in terminal.
Start Menu Accessories Terminal When terminal has started and prompt is displayed, type 'u' with or without the quotes. The main menu line at the top of the terminal window will toggle between display and hide each time the lower case u is pressed. When the menu line at the top of terminal is visible, click on View. The top entry is Show Menubar and the keyboard shortcut shown at the right side of the menu display is a U which is shown in upper case. However I find that upper case U does not have this effect, only the lower case u toggles the menu. On the menu bar click Edit, click Keyboard shortcuts. Deselect Enable menu access keys. Click Close. The words on the menu bar show no underlines. Type u. Menu no longer displays. Type u. Menu re-displays. Click Edit, click Keyboard shortcuts. Enable menu access keys. Click Close. Hold alt, press v, release alt, press m. The menu no longer displays. Repeat alt-v ... nothing happens. Type u and the menu bar displays. Let's try to change the shortcut for menubar (currently u) to ctrl+alt+u (ctrl and ctrl+shift are already in use). Alt e k. Scroll in shortcut keys to view hide and show menubar, key U (which ought be u but let's not get too fussy - though if you can make such a change for all letters to which it is relevant, that would not be a bad thing to do). The Gnome Terminal help file states Viewing the Keyboard Shortcut Settings but of course I want to change them. There is no 'button' for doing so. Right click in the line. Nothing. Left click. Nothing. Click all along the line (you can see I'm trying to be thorough!) !@#$%^* Oh my! Single click on the shortcut key character (in this case the U) and the words New accelerator are shown. Hold down the ctrl and alt and type u. The display changes to Ctrl+Alt+U - success! Okay. The action required so that the bug can be marked 'fixed' is to amend the documentation so that in Section 3.5, under Shortcut Keys, there is an additional section called Changing Shortcut Keys which contains the instruction left-click on the shortcut key value that you want to change. Type the new key value to be used, including control, alt and shift keys as required. The new key or key combination will display. Click Close. That, in my view, is the simplest, easiest, and most effective fix required. Thank you for your support. You forced me back to more thorough investigation, which was indeed required, due to the shortfall in the doco - which I sincerely hope will now be fixed! [Bug 43066] Re: Window list behaves bad when panel is vertical.
Craig's last path works very well for me. For non programmers, you could add a few details : 1) after running : apt-get source gnome-panel apt-get build-dep gnome-panel ... you'll have a new folder named gnome-panel-xxx (xxx might change, for me it's 2.30.2). The file that you need to modify is located in gnome-panel-xxx/applets/wncklet/window-list.c. 2) once you're done, use your terminal to navigate to gnome-panel-xxx and type dpkg-buildpackage. It might take some time to compile the whole thing. 3) when it's done, type cd .. and ls. You should see several .deb packages. I only installed one : gnome-panel_xxx-1ubuntu3_i386.deb (is it necessary to re-install the others?). To install it, type : sudo dpkg --install gnome-panel_xxx-1ubuntu3_i386.deb 4) when it's done, type killall wnck-applet : a prompt (or several ones) will ask you if you want to restart the program, answer yes. The problem is now fixed ! Thank you Craig ! That said, it's sad to see that this bug is still present 4 years after its discovery.
