Agree whole heartedly with Stephan Sokolow. We need a way to have the X server handle the joystick without having it send the mapped events to other applications. Was there any response from upstream? For now, here is how you can enable the joystick within the X server:- sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-joystick This creates the file /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-joystick.conf Now to disable the mouse integration, and create a mapping of the buttons so they all behave as shift keys, edit the file to look as follows:- Section InputClass Identifier joystick catchall MatchIsJoystick on MatchDevicePath /dev/input/event* Driver joystick Option StartKeysEnabled True Option StartMouseEnabled False Option MapButton1key=50 Option MapButton2key=50 Option MapButton3key=50 Option MapButton4key=50 EndSection Now pressing any of the four mains buttons will prevent the screensaver from appearing. Although, this will not work for any games that you only use the direction pads on. I have tested this and can confirm the issue still remains on both Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04, so marking as confirmed. The technical reasons behind the current behaviour do not cause the issue at hand to become invalid. I have just tried this on Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.10 and both systems automatically remove the /forcefsck file after the reboot. I haven't found any official documentation for this file yet, so my concern is whether the behavior of this file is distribution specific. If a disk was busy, Disk Utility could prompt the user and ask if the file system should be scheduled for a check on the next reboot. I have just found out about the special file /forcefsck (http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-force-fsck-on-the-next-reboot-or- boot-sequence/) which forces the file system to be checked on the next reboot, and due to this I think this is a potentially simple implementation. The first patch was not suitable, because it would always close the active tab, not the tab which was clicked on. Essentially I think the first patch was in the wrong place altogether. This is because the login operation happens as soon as the username is clicked, and does not give an opportunity to change the session type / language etc. These are some ideas to solve the problem: 1. Either make the login options bar always visible (which I suspect would not be compatible with Ubuntu's minimal design theme). 2. Don't login when the username is clicked. Updated to gdm-2.30.2 from -proposed and can confirm that it resolves this bug. The new GDM version is much neater. The automatic login is presented without showing the other users. Selecting cancel or pressing ESC disables the auto login and the standard user list is presented. You also have the ability to skip the timed delay, by clicking login or pressing enter. Thank you Nikola for your effort with determining why Don't ask for password on login was greyed out. I tried your solution of creating the nopasswdlogin group and it did indeed allow that option to be selected. However, upon restarting, the users that I selected still had to enter their password at the GM login screen. I eventually found a different resolution at ubuntu forums http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=12777page=2. The thread is very old but the solution still works with Karmic. Same issue here on Dell mini9 running Ubuntu 904 release candidate with netbook remix. Recording to ogg results in just a few clicks. Running the system monitor, I can see both cores are running at maximum. I can get get it to work if I don't have anything else running and system monitor at nice 5. The cores are both right at the top but not quite max. Recording again then causes the cpu to max and the sound is just a few crackles. This is how I managed to get Ubuntu 8.04 AMD64 Beta 1 installed on my Dell Latitude D630. Boot live CD, selected UK, Pressed F3 to select keyboard layout, selected UK. Pressed F6 to specify boot options, added 'vga=769' (without the quotes) to the end of the line and pressed enter. It then booted perfectly into the live CD. I was then able to perform an install normally. However, after the install completed, it rebooted into a black screen. So I rebooted again (ctrl-alt-del) and selected recovery mode (the second item in the grub boot menu). When it had booted into the recovery menu I selected 'xfix' from the list. When that had completed I selected 'resume boot' and was able to login. I then enabled the proprietary nvidia drivers and rebooted. I am also unable to install Ubuntu 8.04 Beta AMD64 on the Dell Latitude D630 because of this issue. The i386 version of 8.04 Beta does not have this issue and I can boot the live cd with ease. My guess (with limited knowledge) is that there are two problems here. 1. The auto detection of the graphics card and LCD is failing, in this case the laptop has a nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 135M 2. The live cd is not handling the low graphics dialog properly. So I would guess that the graphics detection problem is due to the AMD64 version of the driver, and the live cd low graphics problem may well occur in both i386 and AMD64 versions.
