[Bug 1069775] Re: evolution locks up

2012-10-22 Thread Romano Giannetti
It has happened a couple of time to me to. I can stop evolution issuing

evolution --force-shutdown

which I suppose is the same than killing -9. What happens is that a
network connection hangs (like a refresh), it became impossible to
cancel (it says (cancelling) but never do it) and after that every
other operations is stuck.

After restarting it works ok.

[Bug 1069385] [NEW] local delivery folders stopped working on uprade to 3.6.0

2012-10-21 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

I updated ubuntu from 12.04 to 12.10 (I am using gnome-shell and
evolution) and evolution stopped working completely with local delivery
folders. Each time I try to open one of the local mbox file, I have a
bunch of errors of the style:

** (evolution:11783): CRITICAL **: e_mail_session_get_local_folder:
assertion `CAMEL_IS_FOLDER (folder)' failed

and

(evolution:11281): camel-local-provider-WARNING **: Didn't get the next
message where I expected (57226) got 0 instead

with in the end finishes with

(evolution:11281): evolution-mail-WARNING **: Failed to refresh folder:
folder://1350771666.3837.9%40romano-asus/to_2012_07: Summary and folder
mismatch, even after a sync

It's not the sporadic summary and folder mismatch which hunts
evolution till the eve of times, because now nothing works around it
(removing *.index, folders.db, etc).

This is a serious enough bug to be a show-stopper for me.

I found an hint googling but I am not sure if it could be relevant:
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/commits-list/2011-June/msg09955.html

Anyone can shed any light?

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

As ever, all the last discussion is forgetting the user (like myself) which
likes to have several windows on a big screen AND focus follow mouse. Global
menu and focus follow mouse is a no-no unless the window is maximized.
Not all devices are tablet, not every user use their desktop as a big tablet.

How can we have a real desktop revolution without a sane MUA and shareable

[Bug 961667] [NEW] concurrent threads should be limited

2012-03-21 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

I have an evolution configured to follow three online accounts plus a
number --- twenty or so --- local mbox files, filled by an external
program, and a handful of search folders that refers to that accounts.

Sometime evolution is stuck for hours on startup --- when a lot of mbox
files changes, it launches tens of parallel tasks (I have the bottom
status message line filled by updating messages). It seems to me that
evolution is trying to update all the folders in parallel, and in a slow
machine like my netbook that ends in a kind of nasty livelock. I have to
stop evolution with evolution --force-shutdown, but restarting it most
of the time simply show the problem again. Sometime deleting all
folders.db fixes the problem, but sooner or later it came back.

Is there a way to limit the number of parallel tasks so that evolution
can be responsive on the online accounts while munching on the
indexing in background?

[Bug 23810] Re: Evolution is unusable in 1024x768

2012-03-14 Thread Romano Giannetti
@Fabio: I still cannot see the bottom of the configuration windows
(accounts, receiving options, etc) y my 1024x600 netbook. The only way
to solve this is to add scrollbars to these windows, and not create
windows taller then (y_screen_size - whatever header and titlebar size).

So no, clearly not fixed. Yes, you can workaround it by alt+click+drag
(which I know exists, but I am a Linux user since 1989). I have seen new
users stuck on the preference-accounts-edit windows for hours, being
the apply button off the bottom of the screen.

Dave Jone
(http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0705.3/2569.html) said
one time that there seems to be a competition going on about writing the
worst graphical MUA for Linux, and I think that the thing is still going
on...

[Bug 853373] Re: does not import RW2 raw-images

2012-03-04 Thread Romano Giannetti
I personally am using now a script I wrote in python to download photos
now, because shotwell is quite erratic, but I will help test when a new
stable version will be available.

Other things that shotwell does strange with raw files:

* For the cameras where it can find raw files, when saving the files to disk
the jpg name is mangled, stile dsc001234_arw.jpg (?)
* sometime (in the last version) a little-res, low quality
dsc001234_embedded.jpg is saved too, adding clutter, and I have not found a
way to stop it
* when viewing collection, only one miniature is shown, and there is no way to
know if you have a raw or not short of opening the file manager
* when importing from a directory the behavior is different from when importing
from a card --- files are not copied in the fist case. This is surprising
because importing files from a, say, USB external drive gives the impression of
having the photos in your collection but they disappear when you give back the
key...

Hope this helps to have a better shotwell in the future. Thanks anyway
for the work done so far.

[Bug 853373] Re: does not import RW2 raw-images

2012-02-22 Thread Romano Giannetti
@Adam: my concern is well expressed by Maui. The problem is that the
failure to copy raw files is completely silent. I do not know if it's a
problem in gphoto or shotwell, but the problem exists. And yes, the
normal behaviour is download photos and then reformat the card, which
can lead to a data loss.

I am using Oneiric, I think the bug is sufficiently important that it
needs to be addressed here too, not only in the next release.

There are more problems with shotwell when dealing with raw+jpg
downloads and management, but this one is a show-stopper.

[Bug 853373] Re: does not import RW2 raw-images

2012-02-06 Thread Romano Giannetti
Confirm, still happens, seems a bug in libgphoto2. Seems dangerous, if
you trust shotwell for the photo download and after that you format your
card you can loose (a lot) of data.

Moreover, if you after the fact import the photos from a folder, it
seems to download the RW2 files, but they are nowhere to be seen.

Why it is Invalid? It can lead to data loss. It's a critical one, and
makes shotwell not useful at all.

[Bug 305546] Re: Nautilus crashing/freezing when opening folder with svg file

2012-01-02 Thread Romano Giannetti
I can confirm the apparently crazy behavior that Phil reported. The file
from Phil, when put in the home directory, crashes nautilus with the
following error (NOTICE: it's a crash in glibc!)

Jan 2 12:09:40 romano-asus kernel: [307815.741994] nautilus[10155]: segfault
at b6ad7fd8 ip 073fad89 sp b6ad7fdc error 6 in libc-2.13.so[738b000+176000]
Jan 2 12:10:05 romano-asus kernel: [307839.937064] nautilus[10186]: segfault
at b6b09fd8 ip 036afd89 sp b6b09fdc error 6 in libc-2.13.so[364+176000]

If I put it in a subdir, the thumbnail is not generated, but nautilus do
not crash. I can open the svg in eog, it just uses a lot of resources,
and so much memory that the system is sluggish after doing it, and need
a while to come back to normal behavior.

Error #6 is ENXIO? Invalid device or address?

Evidently the problem is still here, and quite severe too. Put that file
in your home dir and a non-technical user will be unable to open
Nautilus again.

[Bug 897700] [NEW] SVG thumbnails still broken in oneiric

2011-11-29 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

Although I have no more the crashes reported in bug#305546, the SVG
thumbnailer is still working suboptimally. Sometime it stops a long time
(you have to stop the nautilus window and the reload with F5), and then
the previewed image is not correct. See for example the SVG file from
Inkscape and the exported PDF preview.

[Bug 594351] Re: summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

2011-11-20 Thread Romano Giannetti
Still here in Oneirc. Now the added problem is that the folders.db files
are scattered around, so you need to rm -f $(find .local -name
folders.db) or something similar to start recovery, which then lasts
hours (evolution try to rebuild all the folders for all the mailbox in
parallel, so I have 100 tasks even if only 2 cores...)

Horrible. If only thunderbird could read mbox directory, served by an
external program, I would switch now. Really there is no decent MUA for
linux...

[Bug 23810] Re: Evolution is unusable in 1024x768

2011-06-04 Thread Romano Giannetti
Well, even if I agree that the bug is long-standing and is annoying,
let's try not to be tragic. I use evolution on a 1024x768 netbook, so
the title (unusable) is not totally correct --- keep in mind the two
workarounds:

- in the mail configuration window, you can use alt+mouse to move the window
into the visible screen. Not intuitive, nor straightforward, but it works.
- in the main window, choosing not to visualize task icons make it possible
to resize it to whichever size, so it's a matter to switch to calendar,
addressbook etc with Ctrl+number.

So I suppose this is not critical --- medium or high, if it is take care
of, is correct.

[Bug 23810] Re: Evolution is unusable in 1024x768

2011-05-25 Thread Romano Giannetti
I'd love to switch to TB, if only it could manage receiving mail in a
local directory full of mboxes (feeded by an external, async procmail
script). Unfortunately, it seems that evolution is the only MUA able to
do this (so sometime I understand why people like Linus still use pine
or mutt).

[Bug 786507] [NEW] in natty, nautilus do not automatically refresh Desktop window

2011-05-22 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Starting with natty, Nautilus do not refresh automatically the icon view
of the Desktop folder. If I save/move a file in this folder, it is not
shown (nor in the desktop of Unity) until I click on refresh or press
F5. In other folders, nautilus works as usual.

[Bug 23810] Re: Evolution is unusable in 1024x768

2011-04-08 Thread Romano Giannetti
Raquel,

Thanks, but I know it (as I said: unless you do the meta-mouse
movement... which means exactly what you said, with the difference that
I have my meta- key mapped to windows key because I use alt- in jed and
emacs). iT is cited in various comments, for example #46.

And as a workaround I can set up various form of virtual resolution
to have a (scaled, ugly) higher resolution on my netbook --- sure.

The matter is, this is not at all intuitive. And that there are
windows managers that do not allow to move windows partially out of
screen, with negative UL coordinates.

Resuming:

- a window that does not fit in the screen should have a scrollbar, otherwise
it is a bug.
- the fact that showing or not a set of icons make the windows impossible to
resize, it is a bug.

Now, there are easy workarounds. So it's not so tragic. Nevertheless,
it's a five years old bug, so I think that it should have been fixed.
This and the obnoxious
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/594351 are
really a pain in the back for an otherwise nice and well done
application.

2011-04-06 Thread Romano Giannetti
Hmmm... again, did the --express mode support calendaring? I was unable
to find it, and without it, I am more prone to switch back to mutt or
pine :-).

Nevertheless, I think this is all a bit overstretched. It would be just

- add a scrollbar to the only dialog in all the interface that do not have it
- see why simply not visualizing the (mail, calendar, addressbook...) icons
solves the resize problem

and evolution will work perfectly in whichever resolution. Just my two
cents.

[Bug 23810] Re: Evolution is unusable in 1024x768

2011-03-23 Thread Romano Giannetti
I agree that all of us should remember that most work here is done by
volunteering time. So please all, keep the temple.

@Marcel: I do not think that --express solves the problem. I tried it,
and the preference dialog still goes out of the screen. Moreover, maybe
I am dense, but I can't find a way to switch to calendar view in
--express mode. The really strange thing is that most panels in
preferences have scrollbars, minus the one that should have it. It is a
bit inexplicable to me.

On the other hand, for the main screen in low resolutions, I found that
the discover by David (comment #48) is a nice solution, even for the
calendar. With show icons off, the windows are nicely resizable to
whichever size.

Error setting value: Bad key or directory name:

...hmm. And

(0)pern:~/software/bugs/nautilus/Boom% xdg-mime query filetype organigrama.svg

So, I am blocked here. I can rename the file with the shell, set the
directory to be shown as list-only, rename the file again and I can
browse safely, but this works until some application try to do a preview
on the #...@¡ file when opening a file, and the crash is again here.

Please: this crash is *two* years old. Would an apport-generated trace
be useful? I can set up to try to generate one.

[Bug 594351] Re: summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

2010-12-16 Thread Romano Giannetti
Well, I still have the problem in Maverick for my mbox folders. On the
other hand, I can have evolution working again simply by stopping it
(exit the program and then, to be sure, issue evolution --force-
shutdown) and then deleting the folders.db file in the mbox directory.

It's a bit of an hassle, but not a disaster. If evolution simply rebuild
the folders.db file each time a mismatch happens, I will never notice
it... On the good side, I never had any problem with POP or IMAP
folders. Just with locally-feeded (by fetchamail and procmail) mbox
folders.

[Bug 689208] [NEW] When switching to contact view, evolution window grow outside the screen and then it's impossible to resize it back

2010-12-12 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This bug is related to bug#23810 (yes, it's that old) but it's a related
but different bug.

I use evolution in a asus eeepc, resolution is 1024x600. I can resize
the evolution windows so that it fits ok, at about 900x550. But:

If I switch to calendar view, the window grows, in vertical, at
something more than 600px. The problem is that if I switch back to the
mail windows, I can't resize back to the previous value, as if the
switching to the calendar view set a minimum size that cannot be
overriden again.

I have to exit evolution and start it again to see the full mail again.

[Bug 305546] Re: Nautilus crashing/freezing when opening folder with svg file

2010-11-12 Thread Romano Giannetti
Still here with Maverick. Really nice.

@Covi: no, the file that crash my nautilus is this:

-rw-r--r-- 1 romano romano 70010 2010-09-29 16:51 organigrama.svg

I prefere not to think what could happen to an unexpert user if someone
send him this file in email. Just trying to preview it will crash. It
took me quite a time to understand what was happening, and I am a
Unix/Linux users since 20 years.

I think that a fix is badly needed, or at least a way to disable svg
preview at all.

[Bug 27014] Re: evolution bug, Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

2010-09-17 Thread Romano Giannetti
The problem still persists, with the evolution that come with Ubuntu
10.04.

If you want to trigger it, it's quite easy. Create a mail account
which is a local mbox folder, which point to a local directory with a
couple of mbox files. Then, open one of the files. Exit evolution, and
after evolution has exited feed the mboxes via fetchmail/procmail.
Restart evolution. You have around 15% probability to see the bug (it
happens to me once every 5-7 restarts).

Issuing evolution --force-shutdown, and removing the folders.db file
from the directory will solve the problem and at the next restart is all
ok. It seems that no mail is lost.

2010-06-21 Thread Romano Giannetti
Still here. See bug #596012.

A workaround is: move the window half out of the top of the screen,
using key-triggered move, so that the bottom edge is half-screen. Then
resize the window using the keyboard again, drawing the bottom edge to
the bottom of the screen. Adjust the options to your taste and then
resize the windows back to its original size (otherwise you cannot close
it) with the same trick.

...a scrollbar would be very welcome, though.

[Bug 594351] [NEW] summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

2010-06-14 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, eeepc 1005PE.

This is very similar to bug #27014, but in that bug we were said to open
a new bug.

I have a directory with several mbox files feeded by fetchmail/procmail,
and kept in sync within my machines with rsync. Sometime, after
receiving mail, evolution spat the infamous error summary and folder
mismatch, even after a sync, and is unable to read the messages.

Fully stopping evolution (evolution --force-shutdown) and restarting it
normally works. When it doesn't work, repeating it (stop and restart),
sooner or later make evolution happy again. No mail is lost, the files
are correctly stored, and all is well.

Please tell me which data you need, and I will be happy to send it.
Thanks!

[Bug 267716] Re: evince sorts double-sided printing wrong, if more than 1 printouts

2008-10-21 Thread Romano Giannetti
I can add a me too to this bug. I have not time now to test II, but being 8.04
a stable release, I think it should be addressed here, to. It's a quite
upsetting bug.
If I have time I will try II beta on a VM, but don't hold your breath...

(this is imported from scheduleworld; it arrived there as an original
X-anniversary entry on my Nokia9500 phone), where it displays ok). It starts
20080829T00 and end at the same time, but it is shown the day before on
calendar.

Google calendar has problems with this kind of events too, but it
display them as an event between 0:00 and 1.00, which is not perfect but
better than this.

I click Close and then my desktop appears with the wrong resolution; wide
 screen instead of 1280x1024.
I logout login and it's fine.

Try to install dbus-x11. It didn't solve the delay for me, but at least
it did resolve the errors.

I tried it, but nautilus resumes in normal times... so it's something
else for me.

I have a gut feeling:

I am trying kernel 2.6.25-rc, which works very well for my laptop, minus
the fact that sometime the gnome login fails with strange dbus messages:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10041 . Now the thing is that
when it happens, the login continues and I can enter gnome without my
setting, but _there is no delay_. So I suspect that the delay some kind
of timeout on dbus/socket interaction of gnome-settings-daemon.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2008-01-14 Thread Romano Giannetti
Hi all,

I have a very similar problem. After a bit of digging I found an entry
for 127.0.1.1 (notice: .1.1, not .0.1) in my /etc/hosts. I commented it
and now the gnome starts fast like in Feisty.

But: why that entry is needed? localhost is on 127.0.0.1, no? Since
1986, no :-)?

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2008-01-14 Thread Romano Giannetti
Yes: what normally there was (at least, when /etc/hosts was written by
hand):

127.0.0.1 localhost my_fancy_hostname_not_qualified_here

...and if you have a fixed IP:

127.0.0.1 localhost
10.1.2.3 hostname.domain

...and on our Debian server it's still like that. This 127.0.1.1
thing is quite new for me. I do not know why it should make a
difference, but still, it's strange. I suppose an interaction with the
name service.

In effect (without any change, with the 127.0.1.1 entry in /etc/hosts):

(0)pern:~/www/DEAROOT% host 127.0.0.1
1.0.0.127.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer localhost.
(0)pern:~/www/DEAROOT% host 127.0.1.1
Host 1.1.0.127.in-addr.arpa not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

So there is a difference. Really puzzled.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2008-01-14 Thread Romano Giannetti
OK, I was wrong. It did not fix the first login for me, just the second
and following one. On the first login after boot, entering in gnome is
slow as a crawl (20+ seconds). Sorry for the confusion. I will try to
dig this more (it didn't happen at all in Feisty).

[Bug 59144] Re: Evolution still warn for a moved (repeating) appointment

2006-09-21 Thread Romano Giannetti
I have another screenshot for you.
What happens is:
- the hour on the (moved) appointment show up correctly.

BUT:
- I have the reminder for the (now not existing) appointment.

Not only:
- I did some quite test before, by defining 1-day or 1-week or weekly forever
appointment, and deleted them _after_ moving one occurence (delete all
occurences on the moved one), but the reminder of the ghost appointment still
is here.

Notice that the edit box has been opened by clicking on the daily
schedule entry; pressing Edit on the appointment reminder does nothing
(quite logically, the appointment did not exist anymore).

I suspect evolution-alarm-notify (and/or evolution/evolution-alarm-
notify communication) for this one.

Romano

PS can I abuse a bit? Can you point to me to some guide/tutorial on how
to keep in sync calendar/contacts between the evolution on my three pcs
(portable, work, home)? The fact is, evolution is a nice name, but
disrupt any chance of successful search on google...

[Bug 59144] Evolution still warn for a moved (repeating) appointment

2006-09-06 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

I have a repeating (weekly) appointment ever Wed, 10:30.
Two days ago I moved the appointment of today (Sep, Wed 6) to 16:00; evolution
correctly asked me if I did want to change all of just this occurence, I said
just this, and closed.
Today evolution warned me, even if in the calendar page there is no such
appointment.
I have a shot that explain this perfectly (you know, one image is better than a
thousand words...).
